Better steering racks available?

I purchased my car new. Quite frankly I can't remember if the steering ever felt more direct than what it does now when it was new or not. I already installed the rag joint eliminator kit a long time ago. I was wondering if there's any other steering rack available for our cars that has a heavier and a more direct sporting feel to it?

Nothing? No kinds of retro fits from another car or anything?

Not exactly no -- only manual racks. If I were you I'd make sure I have the low ratio rack and not a V6 one. The low ratio racks were standard on V8 cars and have a quicker ratio than the V6 cars.

How would one verify this?

All the V8s got the quicker ratio. All the V6s, with the exception of the Y87s, got the slower ratio.

Has anyone ever tried adapting a rack & pinion from a BMW into an F-body? The steering from the 3 series has always been remarked on as one of the best in the market, whereas the f-body has always been one of the worst. I suppose the ball joints and tie rods would factor into the feel as well, but that's a start. I suppose it wouldn't be a very easy task, but I would figure someone's tried it by now...

I wouldn't say ALL V8s.. I've run in to one or two with the standard V6 ratio racks.. But then again those also had 3.08 gears, open diff, and the 120mph speedo.

All V8s as in, all the cars that came with a V8 from the factory... :p

Some did come from factory like that :) Hell, even some T/As came from factory with the standard firebird hatch (low-rise spoiler, not the high rise) -- but those too also had the 3.08 gears :)

Do you work in a salvage yard or something? I've done some reading and I can't find anything to support what you're saying about some Trans-Ams coming from the factory with the Firebird's steering rack.

Problem is that I got a rack from a junk yard sometime ago, and don't know if it is the right one.:(

Do you atleast know what car it came from?

Got any proof of that? In all my time here I've never heard of a V8 fourth gen with 3.08s.

No. It was one of thoese places where you tell them what part you need for what car, and it's taken off for you. I don't know if they match it that well.
