.040 pistons for 3.875 stroke

Need a little help on 4.040 pistons for a 3.875 stroke crank. I’m having my engine bumped up from a 385 to a 398 over the winter and for some reason the person whom will be doing the balancing and assembly is claiming to be having problems finding pistons. Says there is all kinds of .030 pistons but no shelf .040’s.

The last time I did a 398 it had J&E pistons but don’t have model numbers. Anyone know any off the shelf pistons I can use and have part numbers. Anyone have a better alternative?

What coimpression height do you need? In any case, all of the high end pistons are available as "customs" with whatever CH you need for a nominal charge (or in some cases at no extra charge). JE and Diamond are both that way, and others too I imagine.

Call Probe Industries,they can make them if they don't have them on the shelf and any way you want them.

How do the Probe pistons rank as to compared to J&E? Don't know anything about them in terms of quality, weight, etc.

As good a quality as anyone,and better than most.You can get what you want,they can make anything.I have been using them for 15 yrs or more.
Whatever weight,design,ect. Give them a call.

damn i have a set of 4.040 pistons, about 2000 miles on them. custom je's, 1.2125 comp height. but i am running a 5.85" rod. any interest? not sure they would work on your setup.

Well, you need a CH of 1.0625" assuming zero deck and a 9.00" deck height. There are lots of 1.050" 40 over pistons out there and you could use them. A 1.050" piston would require taking .0125" off a 9.000" deck. Of course, you may not need to be at zero deck anyway depending on gasket choice and desired quench.

Denny, You will probably have to get a custom piston as I run these all the time and there are no shelf pistons since no one regularly races that combination.

Now the question is: If I need custom pistons and all my block needs is honed.... Should I do maybe .041 or .042 to compensate for the honing??
