I have an engine w/ a 4." bore , # 1187 crank, the deck is stamped w/ #V1I21DZ Why would the 2nd # be the letter I instead of a 1 ? G M error , a restamp , a crate motor ?? I have all the casting #s if that will help. Please help i want to sell this motor on e-bay and don't want to misrepresent myself. Thanks.

That was pretty common on a lot of motors back then. I wouldn't be too worried about it if the rest of the numbers check out.

What is the date casting on the block?? Seeing an "I" in place of a "1" is very common on Flint engines.

The numbers on the block are 3932386 , and under the timing cover there is 7
6 8 686
386 G38
I have pictures of everything if you want i can e-mail them , thanks

3932386 is correct for a 69 302. But its also correct for a 4-bolt 350 or a 2-bolt 327 for the same year. On the block stamp pad next to the V1121DZ date code there should be a parital VIN number. If its not a restamp, that number should still be visible. I'm assuming by your description G38 is the date code. That transcribes to July 3, 1968 which is ok with a Nov. 21 build date, but might be a little too early. The guys over on the Tag Team forum at camaros.net are much better than I on this, so you might want to ask over there as well.

A G-3-8 is way too soon to be a DZ 302 engine, sounds like a re-stamp from here. You can always ask at the CRG forum, at www.camaros.org

The casting number on the block by the dist. is K 13 8 The G38 is just a # along with alot more cast in the block under the timing cover. I don,t know where the casting date is ?
