Where to find totalled cars...

I know a few guys on here periodically are parting out wrecked Camaros that weren't theirs before the wreck. Is there a particular avenue you could recomend if I was trying to get my hands on a wrecked 98 Z28 for a future project?

I was thinking of contacting insurance companies directly but I somehow doubt that they will be much help. And I'd rather not get one from a junk yard after it's been picked over and thrown around by a forklift.

There arent many options with totalled cars.
1.You can total one yourself and keep it.
2.You can know someone who totals theirs and convince them to buy it from their insurance company before it goes to auction.
3.All cars that are totalled out by an insurance company and pay out a claim are then owned by the insurance co. They have contracts with salvage auctions and don't sell to individuals. I have a dismantling license and can buy from the insurance auction and sell you a whole car with a certificate of destruction, but they're not cheap. The LS1 cars have 3 or 400 % the salvage value of the LT1 cars because everybody wants the drivetrains.

What price range could you get an LS1 car for?

I could probably use a 4.8 or 5.3 liter truck instead.

I wonder if I'd be able to easily swap out the computers and engines later on without changing the harness.

If you have a hard time getting a Z you can get a v6.

the swap to a v8 in a v6 isn't that bad lots of people have done it. Just an idea if you are building up a project car.

I mean I have seen v6s go from free to $1,000 with a clean title and could make a 2 hour road trip(my old v6)

Well unless you are willing to part it out.

I'll have to give a big NO to the V6 idea Eric. Supposedly the 2005 HotRod Power Tour is finishing up right here next year so I want to get my 67 GTO back on the road with an LS1 under the hood for the trip to MN and back. If I have to go with a truck motor I will. But I'd rather have the LS1. Either way, it will have a GenIII V8 under the hood. I'm hoping to be able to use the FRC's from a new GTO too. How cool is that?! So you see... the V6 just won't cut it.

The price varies by year, make and mileage, I never thought about the trucks before,... I'll watch a few this week and see what they go for. You can switch to an LS1 later and use all the same accessories and wiring. You can even get an LS1 intake for like $40 and it'll look just like one.

Another thing, I forgot I have a whole drivetrain still in a car.If you want an LS1 I have a complete setup I'll sell you for $3200. That way you can get everything you need and not spend as much as a whole car costs. It's from a 26K mile 99 TA (mileage verified) and you can get everything from the MAF to the oil pan, with all the accessories, transmission, wiring, PCM

hehe oh you were going that route, I thought maybe you were looking for a project 4th gen to build up.

v6 won't work for that :)

Not ready to buy yet. Just making plans, weighing feasability and seeing if it's something I'll be able to pull off. I don't know how well the shifter would line up if I had a T56 yet. That would be so cool.

The big thing is that I want LS1 GTO FRC's when it's done. lol That way it's got the GTO (Improved) theme.

...and mine will have style to go along with the grunt.

License plate ideas:
NEW GTO
NOT HLDN
NOTA GP
5GEN GTO

Sup Chuck....

Have you seen the NEW edelbrock intake and Carb setup for the GEN III engines.... easy swap no headaches. I would love just to get a 6.0 truck engine....and use that setup in my 3rd gen....

what does a 6.0 used longblock for for whistler???
