Help with 98 SS that's for sale

I have a 94 Z28 6 speed that my son drives 99% of the time. So I am looking for an LS1. I drove a 98 Z28 auto last night and I was surprised on how smooth and quick it was. Tonight I was ready to buy a 98 SS. Great price and excellent shape except for a long key mark the full length of the passenger's door. It had 80,000 miles and I was NOT impressed with the acceleration. Felt very strong in first but when it shifted to second it didn't hit hard until it got back up in the revs. Is this normal, seemed like the plain Z28 (by the way both had 3.23's) was quicker. I ended up passing on the SS because I was worried it wasn't quick enough. My 94 with Macs, 6 speed, CAI, felt much quicker. Should I go after the SS or pass on it? I may make an offer on the plain Z28 because it seemed much quicker, but it's not an SS.

Thanks,
Glenn

LS1s feel faster in the top end. If the Z28 felt faster then the SS at the same speeds then there might be something wrong with the SS.

The dealer said the plain Z28 had a shift kit even though it did not chirp going into second, but it had 285 Nitto's on the back. The car definately felt more responsive.

The SS's engine was not missing or running rough and seemed to pull strong in first, but when it went to second there was a big drop in rpm and it took a while to get it back into the power zone. Wish they'd let me borrow the car and take it to the drag strip Friday night. Nothing like the 1/4 mile dyno to check out an engine!

Thanks,
Glenn

I'm not liking how the situation sounds. I have a 98 Z28 auto, and mine doesn't act like that. It is impressive through the powerband. Even when the car was completely stock it never did anything like that. Not even fourth gear.

I would pass it by to be honest with ya. So I'm gonna agree with the above statement, something might be wrong with it. Not sure. Good luck.

since it has a different cam i really dont know if this will be of any help, but my dads 01 auto SS pulls like a raped ape out of 1st and all 4 for that matter.

i would pass it up. but i also have never driven an auto that was below a 2001. does the cam make that much difference where it is significantly noticable?

Check to see if the SS has any problems, because I think the SS is legendary and nothing like it.

I would check the Z28 for other mods. If the car has a shift kit there are probably a few other things done to the car to make it quicker.
