Question What causes poly fill to a make a sub think it is in a bigger enclosure?

I have always heard people say if you can't build a box big enough just stuff it with polyfill or something like it and it is like making your box a few cubic inches bigger. What I was wondering is how does this happen? How does putting polyfill in an enclosure cause this affect?

The fibers slow down the sound waves inside the enclosure making it seem larger than it actually is.
