Im getting them used for a good price. If I was geting new ones, Id get the afr's. but, my question is what push rods do I need? I see on summits site that it requires custom length pushrods. but it doesnt mention what kind to get. any ideas?
also, which head gaskets do I need to use since its alum.? I use head shims now, to keep my compress. so Id like to do that if poss.. any comments about that? Ive never had nice heads before much less alum. ones, so I dont know if I can do that.

the first gen heads had some problems with valve guides. I would tend to shy away from them. I think you can use a standard 1003 Felpro headgasket.. pushrod lenghts should be checked on the motor (get a length checking tool).

definately check the p-rod length after you have them on. The trick flow website lists what lengths they say you need, but I've heard several people say that those lengths are all wrong.
Besides, proper p-rod length varies depending on your headgasket, block deck, lifter height, cam base circle, etc. Since you'll have to get custom-length rods anyways, might as well get them the exact right length for YOUR motor...

The cost of custom length pushrods must be factored in. Yes, they are required, not optional. Yes, Trick Flow's specs for length on their website are wacky. Start .200" shorter than what they recommend for openers and you'll be much closer to what you actually need. Also, factor in the cost of (expensive) narrow-body rocker arms unless you plan on using stock-type stamped-steel rockers. Crane Golds are about the only ones that work for aluminum roller rockers and they aren't cheap.

All costs considered, unless you planned on buying all these extra parts anyway, they are about as expensive as AFRs when all's said and done.

thanks for the input damon(and everone else). Here's the deal the heads I won my bid on ebay are actually g1's, not g2's, but I talked him down to $400 I know I have to check the valve guides, and I know that these heads dont flow guite as good as g2s. I talked to a guy at trick flow and he said my cam (.510) lift should be alright(as in shouldnt have any piston/valve contact). but I WILL check anyways. I am using my stock type stamped long slot rockers w/these heads. I have some roller tip rockers that I will try also, but i have the stamped ones just in case. I also bought a push rod length checker for $16 from summit, so I know I will get the right ones the first time. I believe I will only need the intake pushrods custom. later, I plan on getting a bigger solid-roller cam and afr heads, but this will hold me over till then. when I do that, I'll sell the whole package (heads, my cam, pushrods, lifters, rockers, head bolts w/washers) to someone w/stock setup or something. who knows. I dont think I'll have a prob. selling it all together. Im running 13.3's now, so I think this will get me solidly into the mid 12's w/my new bullit mufflers to replace my restrictive cheap muff.s I had last time at the track.
