Tried to start the car today.... turn the key to start... and the starter wont shut off! I have to disconnect the battery to kill it. Didnt do this before... I dont think its ignition key related... even if I pull the key all the way back to off and out its still crankin away. Ugh I hope i dont have to pull the starter out and check it out. Anyone have this prob before?
Thanks

Sounds like you need to check and see if the starter is clearenced right. When mine was way off because one end was cocked by the oil pan (long story), there was one time it did the same thing as yours. If the starter gear cannot disengage, it will keep current flowing somehow and keep it turning. Maybe it is very hot out there and somehow the gear got stuck in the out position?

Yeah, I took the starter off and checked it... passed fine. I even went so far as to take the solenoid apart and checked it all again. Was fine and dandy. Placed it in the car and just hooked up the ign key input... the gear extended and retracted just fine. Soon as I placed battery power with the key source... bam. Wont stop turning over. Grrr... hmmm.

You sure it is shimmed correctly?

It sounds like the starter is too close to the flywheel. Try adding a shim or maybe 2 and if that doesn't work the solenoid is just jamming and probably needs replaced.

I went under the car and took a look and the meshing between the starter pinion and the flex plate... soon as I loosend the starter motor it retracted back in... w00t! lol Yup yup ;) That was the problemo. Stuck a shim in there and its all good. Thanks much.!
