Question can an iac get "stuck" on open, and let in unmetered air?

Just as the subject says. The pintle came off of my iac once while I pulled a bit hard.. so I stuck it back in, and it seemed fine.

However, upon low rpm/high gear acceleration, there is a loud pulsating hiss.. could this be the stuck open IAC letting in air?

If so, what can I do until I get that new IAC ordered? Anyone know the part #?

Thanks in advance.

I would say you broke it. I don't see how you could pull the pintle off and just put it back on and it work right. The pintle is motor driven and should not come apart. You are not supposed to pull or push on the pintle of an old IAC.

If you don't have an oil cooler, the p/n is 17113188.

Btw the air that goes in through the iac is metered pintle or no pintle. And you should be fine driving it the way it is till you get a new one. It's just gona idle real high.

Good Luck Mike

i do have an oil cooler.. but i don't see how that would affect the iac?

shoebox - the chilton's manual said to pull/pusl the pintle. I pulled on it slightly, and the pintle came off.. I pushed it back in, and I felt the motor kind of spin while the pintle pushed it in.. weird.

so iac air is metered? doh. I guess having a bad iac wouldn't be able to cause a vaccum leak then..

thanks for the replies.

The IAC for a car with an oil cooler is a different part number, that is why I asked. P/n 17113099 w/ oil cooler.

The factory manual says do not pull or push on an old IAC pintle because you can damage it. (I guess we now know which manual is correct ) It says it is ok to gently adjust a new one if you need to match the length to the old one. Yes, you will feel it spin. It is worm drive arrangement.
