Problems Running System Diagnostics

Hey guys, I've been trying to run engine diagnostics using the jumper wire, but something is wrong. If I have the key off and put the wire in and turn the key on the service engine light stays off. If I turn the key on it will go off as soon as I plug in the jumper. What gives here? I cant pull any friggin codes. It wont even give the old one two, to let me know the system is ok. Car seems to run fine though, well it has ran the same as when I first got it just about, just curios to see if there is any problems. Please help me out here, it kinda sucks not being able to run diag. test. Thanks!

You can't pull codes that way on a 1994. You need a scan tool.

I thought it was OBD I? My Haynes manual says that OBD I was used even on some of the newer style 16 or 18 pin connectors. Guess I gotta go get a scanner aye? Freakin thing lol. Thanks.
