1979 Z28 Camaro problem
I just received a 1979 Z28 Camaro. It normally runs great, with one problem. One month ago I was driving it and when I downshifted there was a loud explosion sound and my car shut off and wouldn't restart. Towed it home and 24 hours later it would start. Had distributor cap, plugs, wiring set, etc. replaced. Yesterday driving it again (after it has been driven some in the past few weeks). Just driving down the road and there was a loud bang, then another. The car shut off and again...same problem. I am assuming that tonight it will start again. Any ideas on where we can start to try to fix this? I am now afraid to drive this car as it certainly isn't proving to be dependable.

Sounds like you have to replace the HEI module in the distributor.
Most of the time when you have an ignition system problem that is fine until it gets hot that is what is the cause of it.
The part should be around 20 bucks worth a shot.
Don't forget to put some dielectric grease on the bottom of it before you install it in the distributor.
