Re: will weld prostars fit with no spacers??

I just went thru this yesterday.
On a 93 Z the front uses a 5/16 spacer and 12mmX1.5 lug nuts that will hold the wheel on in street driving.
The backs are 15X8 with 5.5 backspacing and you have to grind the heck out of the calipers or the car won't move! 12X1.5 lugs work just fine.

Re: will weld prostars fit with no spacers??

Just to clarify - The Welds require new lugs... while its a 12mm-1.5 thread, it is a completely different style lug, called an "extra long shank mag-style" lug with a washer.

And, with the spacer on the front, the stock studs will not pass NHRA tech. They are too short, not sticking out far enough (12mm) into the hex portion of the lug. You will need longer studs to pass tech (assuming they check). There are some 2.67" studs available from GMPP, ARP and Lingenfelter. But once you install them, they are going to be a problem when you go to put stock wheels back on, and they stick out of open-end lugs.

Not everyone who buys Weld wheels are going to race their car so longer studs are not needed.
And the tracks I go to have no tech inspec and street cars are running in the 5s in the 1/8!
I was so tired of reading the same old thing about the longer studs I took a chance and bought a complete set of wheels just to see how and if they would fit.
They fit with the little work I had to do and I have been driving all over the place for the last 2 days and no problems.
Just remember to retorque about every 25 miles to 85 ft pounds for a couple times and then your done.
DRIVE ENJOY!!!!!!

Glad you have 2 whole days of driving to back up your recommendation.

I'd recommend the longer studs. Think about "why" NHRA requires a specific engagement length of the stud threads within the lugs.

160 miles of city street driving.
You can't take high speed turns with the small tires with the longer studs or not, because you risk peeling the tire off the rim,I saw it happen

You made a good looking wheel choice. Now you need to make sure they stay bolted to the car

I like my Welds too. They fit fine.

Re: will weld prostars fit with no spacers??

You have to use the 5/16 spacer on the front because of the way the rim is built,I tried without and the rim won't go past the caliper parts.
The rears need the back fins ground with a heavy duty grinder.
I first ground them to what I thought was good enough and the car wouldn't move,so it might take several times to get it right.
Here is a pic of my car with the wheels.

Re: will weld prostars fit with no spacers??

The "backspace" does not affect how they rub on the brake parts. Its the center disc of the wheel, right where it rolls over to form the knuckle for the rim that catches on the big horizontal bar that supports the brake caliper and pads. Its the wheel "spokes" that hit the spring on the brake pads. Changing the backspace will not affect the center "disc".

Same in the back.... the fins on the brake calipers rub on the center disc where it rolls over to form the rim.

Brake grinding (note 3" studs):

The results are worth the effort, IMHO:

Re: will weld prostars fit with no spacers??

Rather than worry about spacers as so forth I recommend just going for a set of Bogarts. I have a new set of Bogart D10's sitting at my shop ready for installation on my car. I am just waiting for my tires to arrive. The Bogarts are a direct fit without any spacers and allow you to run a Hoosier 27x11.5 QTP easily on the rear. Also, did I mention that they are hella light...Just a thought.

Bogarts might not be as expensive as you think. They are more expensive than the Welds, but they aren't horrible by an means.
