What are the OEM wheels for '96 Camaro SS

Hello! I just bought a '96 ss camaro, has all the badges, hood, etc, but one thing doesn't fit! I have 16" wheels, they look identical with the 17" it's supposed to have, have the SS caps, but why are they 16"? Could this camaro be some special version for europe? (I live in romania, bought it from here)

I'm new to this forum, hope to learn from you all about this great car!

Thanks!

I recall there were 16" SS wheels put on convertibles, possibly '96, not sure.

Yes, that must be it ! Mine is a convertible! It has written on the driver's door on those SLP stickers tire sizes 245/50ZR16 front and rear! But all the models i found on the internet had 17"... i guess it's a convertible thing.

Ok then

Why not? We got a lot of exotics going around too! But i gotta admit my SS is the only one i've ever seen... Very very few camaros around. The wealthy people go for S65AMGs and H2s and Bentleys more...

I also have a non tire related question... My SS tends to jump a whole block in the heat tach while i'm going real slow or standing still... is it normal? While moving it's under the half way line, but if i go real slow or stand still it goes up almost to the last line before red.

Thanks !

Sounds normal, the low speed fans come on at 226* and the high at 235*. To run cooler you need a 160* thermostat and have the PCM programmed for the fans to come on like 180 low, 190 high..

Re: What are the OEM wheels for '96 Camaro SS

My 1996 SS convertible also has 16" wheels, thats how they came. Probably to be a little less harsh riding given the loss of the top. We would have to ask SLP for the real reason.

As for the temp thing, mine has similar characteristics: 1/4 temp gauge normally, but after I get stuck at a light or go slow for awhile can creep to 1/2 gauge. I have seen it go to 3/4 before but that really concerned me. I checked the coolant (added a little dexcool), and did an oil change (it was overdue). That seemed to remedy it. Im pretty sure that the thermostat is just resistance based, so our gauges may just be calibrated differently.

Have fun with your SS...

Ok then, sounds good. I just came home from racing tonight, on the streets. Beat up some cars that seemed pretty hard to beat before i got this car. Beat a Renault 5 turbo with 150hp on under 800kg car, Opel Calibra 4x4 2litre turbo, a '88 BMW 325, 2.5litre 220 hp on approx 1100kg. I've become famous in 2 days! The funny part is the engine needs getting back in shape, the spark plugs and wires are VERY old, the engine misfires and runs pretty rough because of ignition... i can't even immagine what will happen with it back in shape

Also, related to the ignition problems, i think the mileage of the car is affected. I'm doing 10-11 mpg city, low profile or race! Otherwise, on the highway i've done 24mpg. Hope the city mileage gets better...

LOVE THIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Re: What are the OEM wheels for '96 Camaro SS

Right now the car is parked in the service garage, my AC compressor blew up (the former owners didn't fill the installation figuring what do they need AC for...), burned the belt and makes a horrible rattleing sound right now. Ordered a new one from the states gotta wait 2 weeks for it to get fixed... Sad really...

Johnnynsac: this forum doesn't seem to have the facility to upload pics. and i don't really have a place to upload them and give links. suggest something

Re: What are the OEM wheels for '96 Camaro SS

You could get what's known as the 1LE AC delete pulley. The 1LE cars were intended for competition, and had no AC. Instead of using a different belt, this "AC delete pulley" was used in place of the compressor.

I've seen them on ebay, in the classifieds on this site, etc. Hopefully someone else will chime in with info on where they got their delete pulley.

Here's a picture of one.

Of course by the time it gets to you, your A/C compressor will be there already.

Re: What are the OEM wheels for '96 Camaro SS

This is awesome! And as the auction sais, it's a GM part. That SHOULD mean that my service could find it in their GM parts database and bring it instead of the AC compressor. Save me a few hundred euros But then no AC...oh hell i have a convertible

Thanks for the info guys, hope it helps...
