Tire Shopping for the SS

Front:
Combo A: Sumimoto HTRZ-II
Combo B: Kumho Ecsta ASX
Combo C: BF Goodrich g-Force Sport

Rear:
Combo A/B: Nitto NT 555R Drag Radial
Combo C: BF Goodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial

Costs
Combo A: $535
Combo B: $590
Combo C: $635

Considerations
- Car is a summer toy. It was driven 2,000 miles last year. Tires most likely won't be going on until the Spring 2011, as I have a fair bit of tread left. They might go on this season if I drive it a lot.
- I am worried that the BFG Drag Radials will wear very fast. I think they will hook up better at the track but the car has been to the track twice in the 2.5+ years I've owned it.
- I have Sumitomo HTRZ's (not the HTRZ-II) on my car now, and they seem to wear very fast. I think the Kuhmos will last longer. Never ran the g-Force Sports but I really liked the BFG g-Force KDWS that I had on my 1994 Z28.

My Brother in law has the Nitto on his 01 Bullit Mustang drives it every day in Virginia, tire wear is pretty good. I think the best for tire wear is the ET sreet though.

If I was going to do a all day everyday tires though and price wasnt an option I would go with the KDW.

And yes the BF Goodrich Drag Radial wears fast.

Price is an option, I'd like to keep it under $650 shipped for 4 tires if possible. If it wasn't an option I'd go with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3.

Not really any options for 315/35/17's other than drag radials. I had Sumitomo HTRZ's all the way around and they spin pretty easily and are looking pretty well worn after 10k miles

I bought the car with balder NT555R's on it and liked them, but the car was a DD at the time so I went with some Sumitomos out back for better traction in the rain.

What kind of mileages should I expect out of BFG DR's? 6,000-7,000? Nittos? 9,000-11,000? I won't be at the track more than once or twice a year. No big burnouts at the track. And I don't plan on smoking them on the street either.

While Drag Radials hook well, I've heard they have a very soft sidewall, and therefore are not as good for cornering. Now a 'Summer Toy' car seems like you'd want handling as part of the package and not just maximized grip for the 'Track'.

If you're waiting until Spring of 2011 (15 months out)... I'd save your pennies and up the budget for DS3s or some other High Performance Tire.

there's really not many options for 315/35/17's. These are the prices of 315/35/17's off Discount Tire Direct or Tire Rack. Ideally after I graduate college (May '11) I'll either decide to keep the car and dump a ton of money in it, or sell it but even if I decide to sell it I probably won't sell it for a year or two so I can save up a down payment on something nice (2010+ Camaro SS, 2006+ C6). If I decide to keep the car (which is a posibility, I've wanted a LT1 SS since I was 12) i'll eventually pick up a set of gray 17x9.5" ZR1's (or 2 maybe 2 chrome 17x9.5" ZR1's) so that I can have a set of matching 275/40/17's then I'll come up with something else for the track.

Street*
Sumitomo HTR Z - $115/tire
Kumho Ecsta XS - $205/tire
Nitto NT 555 Extreme Performance - $208/tire
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 - $328/tire

Drag Radial*
Nitto NT 555R Drag Radial - $179/tire
BF Goodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial - $190/tire
Nitto NT-01 Drag Radial - $215/tire
Nitto NT-05 Drag Radial - $218/tire

*All prices are for 1 315/35/17 tire

As a side note, I didn't notice that they sold a 315/35/17 NT555 (non drag radial), so that is a option. I currently have HTRZ's all the way around and they aren't great. I've got 10k miles on them and they're starting to look pretty worn, but I think they should last the whole season. I need to take a look at how worn they are next time I go back home.

While I agree with you D3's... they're just too far out of budget. I think it came out to about $1200 for a set of 2 275's and 2 315's... Once I get 9.5's on all 4 corners I'll go with something that'll let me handle bette
