the 555R is dot legal, but the 555R2 is not. dont know why, and can't imagine a cop looking at that. its got the same tread pattern even.

Are you sure about that??

Maybe they weren't when they first came out, but have since been approved?

Yeah, I'm with the Capn on this one. I know some guys who run around on slicks on the street that are still DOT approved.

I think you might have missed blackrat's point though . He's saying that the 555R's (the drag radials) are DOT approved, while the RII's (auto-x tires) are NOT. BFG DR's and Mickey Thompson ET Streets (inc. Street Radials) are both DOT approved as well. There's no argument about that. The tires currently in question are the 555RII's (but the Nitto site says they're DOT approved, so maybe that's something that's recently changed? ).

Good catch, yeah they must have been approved recently or something. I remember when I tried to buy them from a shop the guy was telling me they weren't legal for the street, plus their old description mentioned the non-DOT status of them.

Still wonder what makes them legal/illegal.

I don't think it has "just" became DOT approved. The reason I say this is that I have had then on my Z for the last few years, and if they weren't DOT approved, I doubt they would put them on my car and let me drive off on the street without at least mentioning that they weren't street leagal.

I've had the RII's for a couple of years, and they have been DOT approved since I bought them.

I don't know what to say, I just remember what they said and what I read when I first started buying them a few years ago too. Either way, they are definantly legal now.

AFAIK, they were DOT legal since the get go. they are pretty much the same tire as the 555R with a sidewall stiffener.

:sigh: Well, this is going to go back and forth. Call me bullheaded, but I know what I dealt with when I first got them.
