Powder coat or paint

Thinking about refinishing my stock z28 rims to a translucent black. Would it better to bite the money bullet and get them powder coated or just go with paint?

I'd just paint 'em black but that's just me. If you want powder-coated rims, your money would be better spent getting an aftermarket set of poweder-coated rims or getting an aftermarket set and then powder-coating them later on down the line.

You're welcome, man. I've been seeking out help for my '94 on here so lately I've been trying to return the favor wherever i can. Rims can be a fickle creature. I recently considered getting my wheels widened but ultimately decided against it, after talking to a couple guys on here they helped me realize it was too expensive and too much could've gone wrong. When you get your wheels painted, post some pics if you can. What year is your Z bro?

If you happy with your current wheels then get them Powder coated. if you not sure, then take your time and paint them yourself.

Re: Powder coat or paint

If you put alot of miles on the car I'd recommend the powder coat over paint. So far 12k on mine and no rock chips. Where as the centercaps i painted black have a few nicks. A buddy of mine did all 4 powdercoated for $200. I stayed with stock wheels because out here they will steal the car just to get an aftermarket set of rims or a stereo system. Since i had a hell of a time finding a pic before i did mine (couldn't decide), here's what it looks like on red->

Sweet. If you're going to do it yourself, it's pretty simple. Just need sandpaper, primer, paint, and clearcoat. All available in a spray can, except the sandpaper, I think. lol. People have had pretty decent results with that. You could definitely give it a shot, and if you don't like it, then get some aftermarket rims or get they powdercoated. They look pretty nice in black in onefastmx5's pic.
