painting wheels

ok i just got a bad deal on a set of zr1s off of a board member. they need to be repainted bad. anyone have tips on that duplicolor wheel paint? will it look good? how to get the lip to tape off right? also what would be a good color? i really like the silver that they are but if im going to repaint i could change colors. i wont do white or black. anyways i need painting tips to make them look good. i figure if i go with the silver i can just scuff them up and one coat may do the job.

youre gonna need more than one coat... scuff em up and take off the clear... primer then paint... good prepwork ensures long paint life and good adhesion. I would also say use some clear to ensure gloss... after a couple of months the wheels lose their shine, so i suppse a clear would help yea out.

Have you thougt about powder coating the wheels? I just got done doing a set of C5 wide spokes and they turned out GREAT...but the wide spokes just haven't grown on me yet.

powdercoating is the best way to do it and can be had for 50 bucks a wheel usually

I'll agree that powder coating would be the best idea but $50 per wheel, IMHO, is way low. I know that pricing varies depending on location and the shop but generally figure $100-$200 per wheel. If a good coating can be had for $50/wheel...JUMP ON IT!

I used the Dupli-Color Graphite paint - and I absoultely love the color of it.

Like mentioned - it is all in your prep work. My wheels were polished aluminum, so I just gave 'em a good cleaning and scuffed them up. With the Dupli-Color wheel paint priming isn't supposed to be necesarry.

Just make sure you have a good surface for the paint to stick too - no oil (don't touch them on the surfave to be painted after sanding). Also - use the clear coat.

OMG you have to be kidding. You can get them CHROMED for less than that. $200 a set MAYBE... but most shops here will do 'em for $50 or less a wheel. Last set I heard someone doing was for $100 for all 4.

$100/wheel CHROME: http://www.santaanaplating.com/
Trust me... pay the extra $25 for a barrel polish, my ZR1's look tight with it.

Lightbulb

Interesting option for those looking to be unique: http://www.porsouth.com/topcoats/col...chrome_kit.htm

I can't help but wonder what polished aluminum or chrome ZR1's would look like with red color chrome scallops on the inside faces of the spokes.. maybe just the lip... maybe just the lug nut area.. I dunno. Not a big fan of painting wheels, but this sure is interesting for us chrome nuts.

OMG I am not. I have yet to see a set of four wheels leave the shop I work at for less than about $350. and if there is any polishing work or additional colors the price can easily go to $200 per wheel. A similar comparison would be the cost of a paint job. It can vary several thousands of dollars depending on the shop and location.
BTW, if a shop properly coated a set of four wheels for $100 there is now way they made much, if any, of a profit. Some shops around Philadelphia will heat up a part and spray it hot. It may look identical to a part that has been washed, cooked, prep'd and sandblasted before it's sprayed, but it will not last NEARLY as long.
That just my .02...

Can you paint over chrome wheels? Do you have to scuff them up first? Just wondering.
Thanks
