Painting stock rims good or bad
Re: Painting stock rims good or bad
Some people like it, but to me it just looks "cheap". I wouldn't do it.
Im guessing you want to paint them black, and in my opinion black wheels look horrible unless there is a semi deep chrome lip around them.

Re: Painting stock rims good or bad
Lets see.
You're obviously displeased with the way they look stock or you wouldn't even ask about this.
You could
A: spend several hundred or thousands on new wheels
or
B: spend a few bucks on some rattle cans and see if YOU like them painted.
If you decide on route B. It has been done. I've changed the way my 10 spoke wheels look twice using this method. I have gotten nothing but compliments. People even thought the wheels had been powder coated.
The key to any painting project is prep. Take your time and clean the wheels then clean them some more, then when you think they're clean enough clean them again. Then you will be ready for priming and painting.
Personally, I have to agree. All black wheels doesn't look right to me. They need some silver lip to break the monotone. I've also seen the reverse pulled off well. Black rim with silver spokes.
The thing is, if you don't like it. You're not out much. Someone will trade you regular stock wheels for them or buy them.

Re: Painting stock rims good or bad
I've seen a few cars with painted rims and they look pretty good. Be prepared to have some touch up paint on hand because once you start getting stone chips and curb dings, they will start to look nasty.
Re: Painting stock rims good or bad
Although I'm not a fan of black rims, I'd say go ahead and paint them. Just prep them VERY well. If they start to get chipped up, have them sandblasted and powdercoated...problem solved.
Re: Painting stock rims good or bad
I have the same question I have the 30th anniversary wheels on my 97 camaro and they are white. All i want to do is paint them the came color would i just be able to clean them well and paint over the existing paint? Does anyone knoe if these are powdercoated stock?

They're painted from the factory.
Here is a link to my first repain of my factory 10 spokes:

This is after I stripped the paint and discovered the machined surfaces underneath the paint and then made them into LE clones.
