Need a tire recommendation
Need a tire recommendation
Its time to buy tires for my 97 SS (2754017), and I'm looking for something reasonably priced with decent treadwear. The car isn't raced, and its mostly stock so I don't need anything exotic. I do drive about 5-700 miles per week, and would like to stay under $150/ea if possible. Any recommendations????

Re: Need a tire recommendation
The 712's suck IMO. They tend to track, are in NO way truly round (takes a lot of weight to balance) and their traction is marginally better than the stock GY's. I've read good things about the Kumho MX though.
For inexpensive check out the Fuzion ZRi on tirerack. They're like the more expensive Bridgestone Potenza.
If you go Sumitomo I'd get the HTRzII.
Anyway, use tirerack.com for research. You can read reviews people have posted about the tires and form your own opinion, but you do tend to get what you pay for.

Re: Need a tire recommendation
I just got my Fuzion ZRi's put on about 800 miles ago and I am very happy with them. They get great reviews all around yet are very cheap. I have 275/40/17's by the way. I hear bad things about sumitomo and it seems that nobody is happy with the Kumho 712's. Also, I drive like a maniac spinning tires off every light and I have not notices any excessive wear. If you want to get a little look at the tires here they are mounted. I could take a close up shot or 2 if you are interested...Also you can see what they look like spread down the street.

Re: Need a tire recommendation
How do the Fuzions hook? Thats the only thing keeping me from buying them and why I'm leaning towards the GsD3.
I want traction!!!!! I didn't spend $ to make my car handle and perform better just so I can overpower low priced tires.

Re: Need a tire recommendation
tomcat, you need to be careful doing those burnouts.
looks like you have a pretty bad problem with wheel-hop. wheel hop creates shock in the driveline. and shock in the driveline for a stock rear end equals failure.
lastly, NEVER do a burnout backwards.

Re: Need a tire recommendation
Yea the reverse burnout actually was not planned, It was a sudden angry outburst towards the garbage truck in the road. I now know that it is a VERY stupid thing to do because my car has been acting strange, but all that is for another thread...
The Fuzions are hooking very good when its above 55ish and sunny. I noticed that on the cold 30 degree drives in the morning the tires are not nearly as sticky, but i think thats normal for any tire.
If you are willing to spend more money on a better tire, Im sure you could find somthing better. I am on a small budget however so even the 110 paid for these tires was pushin it for me. Usually the more you spend, the better tire you get.
Overall though I dont think I could have spent the same amount of money on a better tire.
