50mm, 54mm or 56mm offset

I know I'll get nailed for this, but I couldn't find a previous post that answers my question. I'm getting ready to put tires on the ole SS. I was thinking about upgrading the rears to 315's on some 11" ZR1's. I found a pair of 50mm offset ZR1's. I have seen them in the 3 different offsets listed above. I know that the lower the number the further the wheel is pushed out. I have seen a 50mm wheel, pic on here, and it looks pretty good. I just don't them to stick out and look like some 70's Camaro with the wheel hanging outside the body. PLEASE help me choosing the right wheel. I'm not too sure on the tire I'm gonna use, probably GS-D3's. The car is lowered 3/4" right now, but I will be going with Sam's complete suspension kit.

they dont make 54 or 56 in 11in zr1s...50 and 36( or 38, I cant remember ) are your only choices.... obviously stick w the 50.

The FAQ shows where a 50mm wheel sits, and the possible problems that you may face with the jounce bumper bracket and the inner fender liners. Increasing the offset to 54mm or 56mm (never actually saw anyone offer those) will move the inside edge of the wheel/tire 0.16 to 0.24" deeper in the wheel well, making the problems with the bracket and the inner fenders more likely.

Many people run the Torque Thrust II wheels with a 45mm offset. That is pretty much the limit. There's a link to a photo of 17x11 45mm TT II's in the FAQ:

I run the 50 mm zr1's on mine with out any modifications or adjustments. They are close to the inside of the wheel well, can bearly get a finger in between the tire and well. Here is a rear pic with 315's on mine.

^^ those nittos are going to run skinnier then the gsd3s he wants to get.... the gsd3s are going to be close to hitting the inner wheel well at stock height... when lowered. its almost certain they are going to hit... Especially on sharp turns.

by the way... heres some pics of diff 315s on my cars... 17x11 zr1s, 50mm offset stock height. I didnt modify anything, but it does rub on sharp turns.

17x11 tt2s(WIDE 315 BFGs(46mm) on sportlines, I rolled the fenders, grinded the bump stop(i wont do this again) and did the bfh mod

black zr1s with sumitomos(run pretty skinny)

I have other pics with diff wheels I had on/diff springs(ie. stock, prokit, sportlines),, but I figured this would give you an idea. by the way. when I had a prokit. I didnt need the fenders rolled.

Is it my computer or are all those pics way too dark to see any real details of the tire widths? I'd really like to see a closeup (WITH FLASH!) of how the inseide of the wheel well looks with those 315's. That's some monster meat!

jpack24's first photo is clear enough to see the tread pattern on the tires?????

Here's photos of the inside edge of the 17x11 50mm 315/35-17 setup on my Formula:

Right side:

Looking straight up from the floor:

These are too dark to see the details.....

I'll tell ya what...them fat tires --to me--is what really makes an F-body look mean. Those are great detailed pic, THANKS!

I'm just scared with all the extra traction, I'd tear my rear end or driveshaft up while launching hard.

Your A4 will be a lot easier on the weak 10-bolt than an M6. Shouldn't be a problem at relatively stock power levels.

Fred, Did you grind on your bump stops? Mine have rotted and fallen off. I need to replace them. I'm going with Sam's springs and revalved Bilsteins. I can't afford Koni's right now. I'm also going with Sam's front and rear sway bar kit. Did you have to BFH the inners at all? Thanks for everyones input.

There are photos in the FAQ stickied at the top of the "Wheels and Tire" forum topic listing. They show the cut on the jounce bumper bracket, and the hammering on the inner fender liners.

As noted in the FAQ, not everyone has to do any or all of these mods to make the 17x11's fits. It seems to depend on the build tolerances, specific tire section width, etc. I did what it shown and described in the FAQ.... some people did not have to do all of these.
