Texas Mile

Went to the LSRA Texas Mile at Goliad,TX this past weekend. This event is like the Maxton Mile over in North Carolina that has been held for many years.

It was an interesting event. It takes place on a 1.5 mile airport runway and unlike the 1/4 mile, you do not start from a christmas tree. The timing trap is in the last 32 feet so it matters how fast you are going at THAT point-not how quick you got there. There were a good variety of cars present... several GM cars from past ORR events that I was familiar with, plenty of Corvettes and Vipers, Subarus. Porsches and lots of bikes. One of my ORR bud's has a Lingenfelter SS with a 427 and he ran consistent 168-171mph Saturday. One of the Z06's from ORR ran 170-175mph and did 193 on the bottle. They would not let him run faster without a roll bar. I question the wisdom of even running THAT fast with just a harness bar. Did see a Corvette burn on the course and I have some video of that I will post later. I ran a best of 157.566mph on Saturday. I was hoping for 160mph so it was a good weekend. The car is an A4 and set up for road racing, not the drags and I did nothing to change the configuration for the standing mile. As I was loading up Sunday, one of the guys stopped by and said "You embarrassed several Corvettes with that little Camaro" which was true enough. The car would pull strong through 3rd but bogged down badly when it went into OD..... just not enough track to air it out properly. One of the bikes - a Hayabusa?- ran 237mph. Almost all of them had big bottles hanging off the frame and whenever I saw one launch I always thought the same thing-insanity. Many of them were making passes 200mph+.

As a further wrap up for the year, I got a call from the race organizers at the Roadrunner ORR Wednesday. They asked me to return my 3rd place trophy. The reason? They had made a computation error and I actually tied for 1st place! First in the 145mph average class running solo! I am excited about that.

I will try and post some video later. Where were the rest of you at that said you were coming?

Hi Lloyd,

What was nice was no lights to watch and no worries about 60ft times.

BTW, your heads and Bret's cam have worked out nicely all year. 1st place at Ft Stockton in the 145mph class. I bet I ran the car 30 miles of the 80 mile total at 160-165mph.

Andy
