strange odor at wot...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ok heres what happens, when i get on the throttle for prolonged periods of time, say a pass at the track or if i punch it on the highway and hold it, it starts to smell really bad in the car like something is burning, there is no smoke anywhere, i pulled over immediatly because it got really bad this time(yes it does it when i get on it regularly but not this bad) and hopped out, the car wreaked inside so bad it was almost unbearable. yet outside, underneath it, behind it, and under the hood there was no odor... my other 01' did this when i first got on it a few times but then it stopped, this ones doing it more and more every time i get on it... the smell is similiar to burnt mud(yes burnt mud, i used to play offroad alot in my truck) i cant describe the smell better but its not gas, exhaust, brakes or anything else... i have no idea what it could be so any ideas would be great. oh yeah my buddy with a 98' has had the same smell in his car a couple times as well when he got on it.

I've been wondering the exact same thing. I've had my '02 Z28 M6 for a little over a month and have the EXACT same problem as ou which has never gone away. WOT is the only time I ever smell it.

What you have there is a leaky exhaust unit. The only fix for that is major surgery. The temporary fix for that is a product you may have already heard of...."Depends."

Actually Slo-ride may have it right. Could be an exhaust leak or the exhaust touching the body and burning the under rug sound padding. I had this happen above the CAT on my 84.

its not an exhaust leak, no where near the same odor and ive already checked it to make sure just in case. sides it only happens at wot at high speeds since revving it when its parked doesnt create the smell...

One more try. I have read a few cases of the power steering reservior leaking or over flowing at high rpm. If this is spraying onto the exhaust and buring off it would not leave much indication of a leak.
The only thing I can think of is some kind of fluid getting on the exhaust and burning. Problem is that if you had a leak you know because you have to keep refilling what ever is leaking.
Very strange? Let us know if you find the answer.

I got it!!

You're not going to believe this but I figured it out. I spent quite a bit of time last night pouring over my engine bay in hopes of seeing something that could contribute to your current problem. After hours of brainstorming for possible solutions, one thing kept coming to mind and the more I thought about it the more it made sense. You're closer to the problem than you probably could have ever imagined.....it's your upper lip.

ok...i gotthe same problem...starting to notice it REALLY bad tonight, specially since my buddy driving behind me said it was unbearable, i think im just gonna bring it to the dealership or some garage tomorrow, and see whta it is..in my case im presuming its either an exhaust leak or that problem about fluid getting on the exhaust and burning off..but whatever it is i cant stand it, and its worse outside the car!!!! oh well..hope i dont gotta ditch out much money, im at 36,600 miles

same thing

Same exact thing is happening to me, only at WOT, it smells like burning plastic, and the more you get on it the worst it gets, my mechanic said not to worry about unless some evidence pops up of something going wrong. But he also said it could be the brakes, because there are so many pounds of pressure being applied to your brakes at all times, he said i might have to much power going and the brakes are burning up, and that I might want to upgrade my brake system. he said this because I got on it before i brought it to him so he could smell it, he noticed that my brakes were turning blue, which means they getting too hot!

let me know what you find out though!!
