San Antonio people inside...

I'm not sure if she'll post it in here, so I decided to forward it to the right people...

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...threadid=35317

"Ok, here's the scoop: my husband is going to be transferred to San Antonio's Ft. Sam Houston. I am planning on moving in a month or so. I need help from anyone that knows their way around town. Can you point me in the right direction of a good area of town, an apartment complex, or furnished complexes around the northeast end of town, please! I don't have much time, but I'd like to know if I'll be in a safe area, etc. I have two very large dogs that will be going with me, a boxer and a great dane. I also work for a hospital and would like names of hospitals in the surrounding area. I know it's a lot of work, but I need your help. My email is Ron8556@aol.com if you have any information for me. It would be very much appreciated! Thanks."
Somebody more familiar with SA please help her. Either post it in here or in the Lounge's thread.

Thanx in advance.

San Antonio

I moved to San Antonio less than a year ago myself. Moved to the Northeast side and I just bought a house in August on the Northeast side. If you can find a house for rent it will be a lot better than an apartment. I moved with 2 large boxers and had no trouble finding a place given that I only had 2 days to find something. If you need ant questions answered I will be glad to help, you can email me at ucrazymonkey@cs.com

Believe me I was born and raised in Iowa for 25 years, moved to Brownsville, Texas and now in im San Antonio. You WANT to be on the Northeast side. Only people that were raised here would tell you different. The South side is not the nicest nor is the east side. The west side is riddled with construction and seems that everyone and there mother live there. Both my wife and I work there on the Northwest side but believe me when its 5:00PM we are glad we live on the Northeast side.

I appreciate the help. I want to be on the NE side anyway. My hsuband will be stationed in Ft Sam Houston. If you have any names or numbers of contacts, let me know. I usually post in the lounge, but will attempt to check this more often too.

Brenda,

When you get there, go the corner of 5th and main downtown in front of a restaraunt called "Rib Tips". Look for a small man walking a three legged dog named lucky. Tell him you are new in town, but don't look him in the eye!! He hates that. Slip him a 10-spot and ask for the best laundramat in town. He will them send you four streets down to a Chinese Restaurant that serves burritos. Don't eat there. Just go inside, go to the ladies room and get me the phone number written on the left corner of the stall. Then, put two quarters in the machine on the wall and your reward will appear.

Don't tell anyone about this. It's a secret mission!!! The fate of the world depends on you!!!

I've lived in San Antonio ALL OF MY LIFE. I am 20 years old. Anything North, is considered "safe". I myself live on the Northeast side of town. There are plenty of nice housing subdivisions that you should consider rather than apartments, they rent those out to all the poor people under section 8 type housing standards.

Some neighborhoods to look at are North Hampton (from the 80's, I believe) Spring Meadows (70's?), Cimarron (??), Olympia Hills (300's), The hills of Woodlake (100's) etc.

As far as the South side, predominantly hispanic part of town, poverty level high. East Side, predominantly African-American side of town, poverty level high, BUT, they are building the SBC Center and are almost finished, so the east side is getting a HUGE facelift. Road construction, stores, shopping complexes, housing etc.

They don't want all the rich businessman (primarily white males) to go to the arena and have to be surrounded by eyesores on the way there.

The West side is like the South, predominantly hispanic and poverty level is high.

In San Antonio, stick with North, Northeast, or Northwest, sides of town, anything North is good. Anything else and you're looking at poverty and potentially higher crime rates.

Even though some people won't admit it, racial distribution plays a role in where they want to live, which is why I mentioned the race here. If you really don't care, then the East Side is becoming the "New northeast side". Proof of this is why they'd put a Starbucks in the Black community, doesn't make sense.

My uncle used to be a cop and he said the crime on the NE side is higher than that of the east, even though the news states otherwise.

The West is the most crime filled area, someone dies there every night, especially in the last few weeks.

edit: The Hospitals here are North East Baptist (North east), Christus Santa Rosa (downtown), Brooke Army Medical Center (NE), Wilford Hall (??), there are several more but they slip my mind at the time.

You guys are so awesome for helping me out. I hope to meet up with you all some day in S.A. when I get there. The reason behind the apt thing is because its temporary. I will only be living there for the length of time my hubby is in AIT at Ft Sam Houston. That is 70 weeks, so we'll be moving back to Cincinnati in the Spring/summer of 2004. I don't want to devote time and money into a house I don't plan on living in very long. Too much paperwork, too much hassle trying to seel it after a year. You get my point. Thanks again. Let me know if you've got anymore info for me!

Brenda,

Buying a house for 70 weeks is definitely not a good idea. You will lose money because closing costs, agent fees (that will really eat your cash), and not enough time to build equity.

UNLESS, you buy a forclosure or a distressed property really cheap, use the 70 weeks to fix it up and turn it around for a profit before you leave. That takes time a money, which bot sound very tight for you and Ron right now.
