Rear End Advice Please

Well, I just got the bad news? My stock 10 bolt in my 96 z28 needs new bearings and probably new gears. The noise coming from the rear end is vey loud and I doubt there is much time left. I do plan to upgrade the engine at some time in the near future, blower motor maybe. So, is now the time to install the 12 bolt? I need some advice from those that have. Also, I will need to contract the job out to someone in the Houston area. I can't do the job myself. Any suggestions? Where would I get the new rear end and who may be able to do a good job. I am thinking of a 3.73:1. I have a M6 and currently have a 3.42:1. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

i'm in the same boat as you. i'm just waiting until the gears go out completely. i want to get a gm 12 bolt or maybe a ford 9", but i don't want to spend the money($2000) + install. if i purchase new gears and have them installed in my stock rearend it will cost $500, but it will break again. there have been some used 12 bolts and ford 9" on this website, but you never know about used stuff. anyway, good luck with your choice.

If yall want to make the drive to Ft. Worth, I charge $375 out the door for a rear gear swap, or $395 with genuine GM gears. Several people have driven from Houston and Waco for me to do their gears. It's worth the drive! I have a rearend specialty shop. You can ask anyone from the Texas section of LS1.com about my work quality. Name there is: nbm99ta

Let me know..

I'm interested. Driving to big "D" is nothing to me. We were there last weekend just to shop at the malls. What are your shop hours? How long does a typical install take? Do you have gm 4.10 gears available?

Yep, have Pony Punisher do it. He's a gear scientist. I may get time for him to swap 3.73's into mine when I'm over that way!

A new set of Motive 3.42's is $375 installed with all fluids, gasket, seal, gears, and labor, etc.
Or $395 for GM gears (better).
Send me an e-mail for further details. nosaj10358@hotmail.com

Question:

What sort of noises are you guys getting? I just replaced axle bearings/seals thinking that was the problem, but still have moaning/warbling noises around corners. No chattering, vibration, or anything like that. Only 65K on the clock.

Is there an easy way to check for wear, i.e. for the axle bearing, the passenger wheel gave a little so I knew it needed to be replaced.

A trip to Ft. Worth is doable if need be in the future. Thanks for the heads up Pony Punisher.

I'd say there's a 95% chance that at least 1 of the differential or pinion bearings are bad (there are 4 total). Most of the time there is a whining noise, people tend to think it's the gears, when actually it's a bearing. I can do it for 150 + parts. The master bearing/rebuild kit runs about $90 out the door, and I can supply that too, so 240 total. I can have it fixed in about 2-2.5hours.

Ok, Jason. Let's set up a time to do my gears. I went to the drag strip last night and now I have some serious noise back there. If I don't do it now, I will not be driving all the way to Fort Worth. I want gm 4.10s and maybe you could grease my axles or any other maintenance I need. I'll send you some mail.

Wow! Jason just put my gears in my car today and he did an awesome job! Thanks a million Jason. I will highly recommend to all my friends. $395.00 is an unbeatable price for GM gears and a professional top notch job. Your the KING man.

I guess I need to change my sig now to GM gears.
