Question about running low 8's in 1/8 mile

I'm looking to rebuild my motor to a 355 with an STS and I want to build this one to last. I'm not looking to put down crazy hp or 1/4 times, i just want to run around low 8's to high 7's. What would your suggestion for the rebuild be?

stock everything...or if you only have a few grand do stock crank forged rods and pistons, clevite bearings...with stock heads(use your money on the block(you can up the heads later if you want faster, this way you have a very reliable block)
run around 8-10 psi and should get you in the mid 7's
if you want low 8's in the 1/8 just do long tubes and a 3000 stall
(either way you will need a stall...also id keep stock gears(reliability)

Yea I know I'm probably gonna get a stall soon. Everyone keeps telling me that I need a new rear end though. It's helped up good so far racing the brackets once a week for about 3 years. I would go with headers except once the STS is in they become basically useless and well the sts is my wow factor

and as far as money go I could probably sink 5k easily into this rebuild.

Get the budget 355 from one of the board vendors. Get a set of LE1 heads. Get the HOT cam kit. 30# SVO injectors and PaceSetter longtubes with y pipe and a tune. Then get the gaskets and for just over 5 grand you'll be in the 7s with good driving.

yes...if your an auto id have to say dont worry about breaking you rear till you get close to 6's in the 1/8...your auto wont hit hard and brake it..

Well the sts is already going into the car so I'll have bigger than 30 SVo injectors. I'm just think 5k into the engine rebuild and long tubes would be obsolete with the sts sytem. What stall you think I should go with? Oh and its auto with 2.73's

Up the gears. A set of 3.42s from a manual car would be great for you.

Get some better pistons in the thing since you're rebuilding. Perhaps some forged SRP's. The other internals are fine for ~550-600 rwhp. And If you get a cam, get something other than the lt4 hotcam. All that adds is a lopey idle, I've never seen one run all that much better than a stock cammed car.
