If your area isn't strict on having cats go for it. But if I were you I would put a cut out in place instead of just a pipe

get rid of the cat, and put a cut-out in it's place, you don't need a "pipe" just make sure you know what size your exhaust piping is 2.5in or 3in so you can get the right size cut-out.

you will still have back pressure if you run through a full exahust and a muffler. Yes taking the cats off will change the sound and the rasp. If you want the power still and want a noticeable loud exhaust get some electric cutouts installed in place of the cats.
If you run it dumped close to the headers/manifold, yes, you will loose back pressure and run a chance in warping your rods.

I have a set of qtp electric cut-outs on my car, and they are cool to play with, so if you are wanting power it takes 3 seconds to shut them. BTW are you running a cam in this car?

you won't warp rods...maybe in a lawn mower engine but not in a 350...

putting a cutout in place of the cat is the best thing you can do for sound(if you can handle it) and performance. yes it will sound really loud but it will give you more power. back when i had my 94 t/a i had a cutout where the cat was and it ran about 2 tenths and 2-3mph faster in the 1/4. when i had it closed i ran 14.1@97, then i opened it up and went 13.8@99.6
