Need help with a SAAB? Where to go?
Need help with a SAAB? Where to go?
Ok, I've been posting here for about three years and I've always got a massive load of answers for any thing I could ever want to know about F-Bodies, but now I have a question about something totally different. Where on this board (if there is a place) can I post a question about a different make of car? In case you're wondering, my problem is with my 1991 Saab 900 2.0 Turbo M5 Convertible. We've had it since new when we got it in Germany. Everything on the car is original (except the wipers, airfilter and tires.) Everything else, straight from the factory. The car is a blast to drive, but we've been having problems with it the last 4 days. If you know about Saabs, then you know about their crapy battery location, right next to the Turbo. If you're in Europe, then you can get the direct replacement battery (almost half the size of the American equivalent) and the problem of the heat sucking up battery life isn't a big deal. But, over here in the states it's common place to buy a new battery every year to two years for these things. Anyways, a few days ago I was driving home from work and was in 3rd gear at about ~ 2500 rpms when a car pulls out in front of me. I push in the clutch, put the shifter in neutral (so I can select a lower gear when I'm done slowing down), press on the brakes and the car dies. Dead as a doornail. I'm still going about 35mph or so, so I stick in 3rd and just let the clutch go and I'm back in business. Didn't think to much of it, this car is full of weird one time happenings so I'm used to it. It wasn't until it happened THREE more times on the way home that afternoon that I really took notice. I parked it and charged the battery for the night. The next morning, I'm driving up a slightly steep hill in 2nd gear at about ~2300 rpms and put it in neutral to coast down the other side and the car dies AGAIN! So now I was on to try and find the problem. After a few days of playing with scenarios of stop and go traffic in an empty parking lot I've figured out how to manipulate the conditions needed to make the car die. If I'm accelerating faster than usual (shifting at ~2300rpms or above) and then throw it in neutral, the cars rpms drop to 0, bounce to 1 and then falls to 0 and dies. If I'm in a low gear cruising (around ~1000 to 2000) and step on the gas, the car doesn't accelerate very quickly (but it is a turbo, so I'm sure the car is top end by nature anyways) but when I put it into neutral it dies. So basically, when I put a demand on the engine and then stop abruptly, the car will sputter and die. Any advice from anyone? I'm thinking it may be a fuel problem (clogged old fuel filter) or maybe a busted vacuum hose or something of that nature. If anyone has any suggestions or have dealt with a Saab before, please post!

Sweet! Thanks for the link! I knew that there had to be a webboard for Saabs somewhere, but after three days of searching, I came up with nothing.
Thanks again for the link!

My dad and I just finished up putting the engine back into a 1991 Saab 9000 Turbo. He'd be glad to answer any questions. PM me if you want his e-mail address. During the rebuild we asked the guy that owns this place several questions and he was always able to help:
