Post Moving to Texas

Well I am moving to Texas. I am going to be living in Del Rio. I heard that there is not a whole lot in Del Rio but Guess I don't have a lot of choice. Any if you guys can give me to better prepare myself for the complete change in environment would be greatly appriciated.

Went through Pilot training there. Since you appear to be comming from San Diego, all I can say is wow are you in for a culture shock. Good news and bad news. Good news is San Antonio is a mere 2.5 hour drive when you crave civilization, also, Del Rio is a border town, and Acuna is fun. Crosbys (I hope they're still open) serves a wonderful Maragrita in a glass the size of a goldfish bowl. There is a small mall there, when I was there, the largest store in the mall was K-Mart, but hey its a mall. Also, the fishing is good on Lake Amistad, and its a relatively large lake. The dove hunting is awesome in the area. Bad news is well, its small. There aint a whole lot to do if you're single. Worse yet, there is a pilot training base right there filled with single young Lieutenants looking for women... so the pickings are scarce, and competition high. If you're married, great! Its a wonderful place to raise children, low crime, and the schools are actually pretty good - my wife used to teach in Bracketville. The area is west Texas desert, it dont rain a whole lot, and it gets pretty darn hot in the summer, and to add insult to injury, the winters kinda suck too.
Honestly, I kinda liked it there, you're a short drive to San Antonio, the Big Bend, and Pecos River - some of the best camping areas in Texas IMO, very rich in history, and, its populated just enough to give you the absolute minimum necessities (Cable TV, and DSL )

and the best part, you should be able to find a really nice house for a fraction of what you pay in San Diego.
I wish you all the best.

My ex is from Del Rio. Nothing but hispanic culture and stuff down there. It might as well be part of Mexico. Otherwise, it seemed to be one of the least trashy border towns I've seen.

You can cut right across the border and be in Acuna, the town where they filmed DESPERADO!. It's really cool the first time to be in the bar where all that shooting and stuff took place.

Anyway, just sayin it's not the best place, it could be worse though, and there are cool things to do, but most are across the border.

Yeah, roll up to S.A. some time. There's a whole bunch of F-Body dudes to kick it with down here. Maybe we can set up something some time. Sort of like a mini-F-Bod gathering. You might want to pick up a 160 t-stat if you haven't because you should expect temps of 95+ daily and 100% humidity. And that's here in S.A. You'll be in Del Rio, where the temps are more like 100+ daily. Hope you ahve fun training, I know If I had a chance of being a pilot I would.

LOL, right there? it was a 1.5 hour drive I thought. I could be wrong, I haven't been down there since I broke it off with that FU(KING BIATCH. Acuna is definitely fun. Lots of girls, cheap drinks, dirty mexicans.

You gonna be Active Duty?

FWIW, I was stationed at Willie before they closed it, and now that it is closed, and I can honestly say Laughlin is probably the best place left to go through UPT now. (hehe my first assignment after UPT was Minot ND, so Del Rio <really> seemed nice after our first winter in North Dakota) Weather days are scarce, and there really is no better way to study than on a boat on Lake Amistad. Time off at UPT is so rare, you wont be able to get bored, and there is enough local stuff to keep you from going stir crazy. I dont know much about the new dual track stuff, but I know quite a few who do, so if you have any questions just holler and I'll try to help where I can.

1.5 hours is nothing when you make a 5.5 to 6 hour drive from D/FW to Midland/Odessa

What are those?

We have them but you can easily find a shop that doesn't give a ****, and no cop will ticket you for it unless you're doing something stupid.

Prepare for HOT summer days! lol I seem to remember stories from him saying that screwdrivers left in the sun will melt at the handle, etc etc.

My cousin has a deer lease there, the building on the property actually was some radar place during WW2 (an off-base site to warn of incoming planes i think). Not far from the main highway and right next to a big rock pit. lol
