Moving to SA

Hey guys! I'm not very familiar with the board, just lurking quietly most of the time. But anyways, I'm going to be moving to SA - the wife is already there. We've got an apt. over on Ingram, but I still need to find a job before I'm there permanently.

Just thought I'd post up to see what's up with the crowd down there. Anyone have any leads for an AutoCAD position down there?

Later.

Where on Ingram are you located?? I think I'm just down the road from you on Potranco. Check out www.mysa.com

I think I saw a few CAD tech positions on there under the job search. Good luck with the move!!

Yeah, I just checked out that site this morning. I've been putting my resume out there (probably sent it to 10-15 companies), but none of the ads have a phone # to follow up with.

I will be staying in the Silver Oaks apts., on the right just before you get to Culebra. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the info.

I've been checking Monster, Hotjobs, and mysa for any openings, but just haven't been contacted by the employers. I must suck.

I've also been checking on the afjobs for the bases in the area. My wife is stationed at Lackland.

Thanks for the input.

It's possible ;)

But I doubt you suck that bad. Truthfully, the tech market is tough here in San Antonio. Keep plugging at those job opportunities, post your resume everywhere. The larger employers are USAA (I work there :), Citicorp, West (way low pay, but guaranteed work as long as you can read and type) Telemarketing, and there are a few others. The coolest tech place to work at (I left 'cause it was TOO cool for me) is Rackspace. They don't have any CAD positions that I know of, but if you are willing to learn some new ropes, they are definitely the place to be. I just wanted a real career, Rack is hard to make a career at unless you know the right people. Just ask the receptionists there! Anyhow, welcome to S.A., hopefully you are a basketball fan and rooting for the Spurs! I know I am, and I'll be there in person w/the woman tomorrow! Good luck, keep us posted! There are people here looking for tech jobs that have BEEN here, and it is hard enough! I'm sure you'll do fine though. It's a cool city. Well, hot as h3ll, but cool nonetheless.

Rey :)

I did some contract work at Rackspace and I agree...awesome place to be!! Try looking into Southwest Research Institute also. I work there and do a lot of Pro/E and Autocad. Not sure if they have any positions open right now, but check out their website.

Thanks guys. You have been very helpful, but unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm qualified for anything at either Rackspace or SWRI. All the positions there require engineering degrees - which I don't have. And as far as Rackspace - I don't know nearly enough about networking, computers, programming or web design to get my foot in the door there.

I'll keep looking. I might have to go back to equipment operating

Let me know if anyone has any leads.

Hey there. Yeah SA Tech market is tough all right. Tough everywhere actually. I just made it through the 3rd layoff in the last 3 years at my company and have been here 21 years now. Wew. I live on the NW side of town not too far away from Ingram. Lots of good people here in SA.

Yeah, I've made it through 3 or 4 layoffs at my company just in the past year. My office is about 2/3 the size it was 2 yrs ago. I'm wanting to leave, not just because of the marriage, but because rumors are going around about them shutting this office down within a year or two. I'm just not comfortable here anymore.

I'm still looking. My bosses asked for a drop dead date for when I'm leaving, but I don't want to give them one, seeing as I have yet to even have an interview.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for me. I thought this thread was dead by now. I've been keeping an eye out in the express news, monster, hotjobs, and the a.f. personnel center website. I'm still trying to find something...what I really need is someone on the inside somewhere, you know it's all about who you know...

Thanks again
