Just purchased a used block

I am wanting to have it cleaned up at a machine shop. what else should I have done to it to get it ready for a rebuild? Can they do a test to check for cracks? It is going to be a stock cube & crank motor, With 4bolt mains, eagle rods and srp pistons. Learning about the shortblock is all new for me so I appriciate any comments you may have.

Have it sonic cleaned, magnafluxed, align honed, bored with a plate and have them do it hot if they can. If you are getting new pistons the over bore doesn't matter and it will clean up any scarring in the cylinders. You sound like you have a solid short block build in mind very similar to mine. What machine shop are you taking it to?

Wayne Calbert in Denton. Do I need my 4 Bolt main caps in order to have the line honing done? Can you give a little more detail about the sonic testing and having it bored with a plate? I have never heard of that before. Thank you for your help. How do you like the LE1 set up?

I love it, and once I get it tuned I'm sure I will like it even more. Wayne Calvert runs a good machine shop so you'll be ok there. Jim Anderson did mine, he works out of his home now on his circle track stuff after he sold Anderson Engines to his son, but he does odd jobs as well. He did my short block for me, great guy. My short block ran a little over $1500 and that included new Ross pistons. I supplied crank, block, rods and cam and he did everything else. If you want options let me know and I'll get his number for ya. Anyway, you will need you caps to get the align hone done. Sonic cleaning is the best way to clean the bolck and get all the crap out of it, they should do it before and after machining the block, magnafluxing it checks for cracks and irregularities. Boring the block hot with a plate does two things. One it gets the block up to operating temp so the bore is at it's shape when the engine is running. Makes the bore more accurate. Using a plate simulates your heads being torqued on the block so it again is more accurate. The bore shape and size is different when the block is cold as opposed to hot as well as if the heads are torqued down or not. Little things like that make a big difference when building a motor.
