Apparantely, the former owner of my car installed tint that's too dark. A tint shop wants $70 to remove it, so I think I'll tackle this job myself. I don't think removing the tint from the side windows will be too difficult, but I don't want to mess around with the rear glass because of the defroster lines.
Can I still pass inspection if I leave the tint on the rear glass? The inspection station just checked the side windows, and not the rear.

the rear can be as dark as you want just not the sides. have you tried to go to another shop to get it inspected?

I tried one other shop and they were punks about it as well. I don't really care about tint either way. It just happened to be on the car when I bought it, so it won't break my heart to rip it off.Originally Posted by sc1twntrbo

Funny, when I take the vert in I go with the top and windows down. No one yet has bothered to raise them to check.

Austin. I didn't really like or dislike the tint, so I just finished ripping it off and got my sticker. Looks like I won't be getting hassled for this again. Thanks for the helpOriginally Posted by lt1aggie

1.. razorblades
2.. some rough rags
3.. brake fluid---dot3 if it matters.
4.. Windex.. lots of it
try and peel up one corner with razor blade.. get good grip on tint.. as you pull on the tint softly nick the under side between glass and tint untill you peel a large section at once..if you do it slow enough, you will not leave any glue or haze or tinting behind... if you mess up... this is where the brake fluid comes in.
let brake fluid soak into glue for a few minutes, try to not let it run onto any plastic or anything that is not glass or glue. once you feel glue soften.. take razor blade and just scrape off glue like you are squeejying .. in reverse...
wipe up as much of the brake fluid as possible before you get all into the windex.... soak it up really good..
go after it with windex to remove oilbase.

If you want to use the excuse of "The windows are broken and wont roll up" then roll the windows down and pull the circuit breaker out of the fuse box, that will make them inoperable.
If you want to remove the tint, new sharp razor blades are your friend. Start by removing just the film, sometimes you can get a grip on it and pull most of it off at one time, then get an empty windex bottle, fill it 1/8 of the way with shampoo, rest with water, and soak the adhesive and use the razor blades to remove the adhesive. I have done it many times and not hard to do, just keep using a new sharp razor blade. Good thing is heat helps the adhesive come off, so this is great weather for it.
Last option, which I have used is when the inspector tells you tint is too dark, tell him "Can you help me out on this ? If you can there is a $20.00 bill in the ash tray"

The tint came off in five minutes. Now that adhesive is some nasty stuff, but I eventually got it all off with some razors.
