Considering selling the Z28...opinions?

Well, I think I may have to grow up and let my Z28 go. My wife and I had our daughter last christmas and it's getting really sad trying to drive around with all three of us cramped into the Camaro with all her baby stuff. My wife wants a 95+ explorer (4 door), 92-94 full size blazer/jimmy, or 95+ S-Series Blazer/Jimmy (4 door). It would be nice to find someone who had one of these listed above who wanted to trade, but I guess that's wishfull thinking, lol. We are both starting college full time again this fall and this car just doesn't seem very practical anymore. Still, I don't want to get rid of my car, I LOVE this thing. I have a few grand saved, so I may use that to buy her an SUV, but then I'll still have to suffer high gas prices, insurance, ect with my Z. I guess I'm just scared that I'm making a mistake if I sell it. You always see those people that say; "I had one just like, wish I never sold it." or "I would give anything to have mine back..." I'm very attatched to this car (like ya'll can't tell, ), but maybe it is time for me to just grow up and start acting like a responsible father and husband..... Anyone have any advice?

there are thousands of F-bodies roaming the streets, you can always buy another one years down the road.

I've got a 94 z28 convertible with 164K on it. Reverse doesn't work, everything rattles, it needs a paint job, but I still love the stupid thing. I'm never getting rid of mine. I plan on buying an older truck and parking the Z in my garage forever. I'll probably pull it out of the garage on some weekends and put the top down just to cruise around.

If you're like me and have the money saved to buy another vehicle for an everyday driver, I wouldn't get rid of the Z. But if you need the money for other more important things like baby stuff, I would sell it and buy one a few years down the road.

Re: Considering selling the Z28...opinions?

I know I can always pick up another one later on, but it still won't be MY Z28 like this one is.... I mean, I've been waiting since 1st grade to get one. I busted my butt and got a V6 first (insurance) and waited and waited and waited and finally turned 18 and could get a Z and found this one..... It's got soooooo many small things wrong with it.... TONS of small things that just really **** me off, but in the end I love it sooooo much that the thought of going without it kills me inside. But then I'm with my daughter and it just seems so unfair to her.... She shouldn't have to be cramped up in this thing just because I don't want to sell it because of my WANTS and not a NEED. I'm going to search for one with the money I already have, but if someone comes along who wants it, or I find an SUV for my family that I can't pass up..... I guess I'll give her up. I still have my 81 Firebird that I'm working on, so I won't be fully out of the F-Body game.... even though I really don't want it anymore and would like to find a first gen.... dangit, I'm too wishy washy and picky. Anyways, thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Considering selling the Z28...opinions?

I've been there, done that...

My kiddo was still in utero when I sold my Formula, though mine was barely streetable for me w/ heads/cam/stiff suspension/etc... That thing wasn't reliable, expensive as hell to maintain/insure so it was a simple matter of economics. I know in 20 years I'll still wish I had it (I sometimes do now) but then again, there are more important things going on in those 20 years...

We've (read: she ) decided that we'll do another pony type car (I'm thinking a lightly used '03/'04 Cobra 'vert) when our daughter is old enough to ride without a car seat.

Also, I did some checking into the '95+ s-series Jimmy/Blazer and my only advice is to stay away!!! Pretty much from what I gathered the only component worth a damn in those is the engine...

So yeah, to answer your question, I would sell the car. I did.

Re: Considering selling the Z28...opinions?

I guess the question is....what other cars do you have? Does your wife have a car that she drives on a daily basis?
The reason being is that you may not have to get rid of the Camaro. Me and my daughter ride in my Camaro everyday. My husband has an Expedition. Together, sometimes we take the Camaro and sometimes the Expedition. It all depends on what the condition is (ie. going to the track, going on vacation, etc. etc.)
It seems to me that usually couples have separate cars they commute in everyday. So maybe she should sacrifice her vehicle for the vehicle she wants.
I don't think Camaro's or any car that you like/love should be considered something that you will grow out of. I've always had a Camaro, and always will have a Camaro!
And on the other note, I personally don't think the Jimmy/Blazer or Explorer type is the way to go for an SUV type vehicle, they are still on the small space/room side of this situation....I have to say if you wanted an SUV I'd go with a Tahoe, Expedition, Suburban, Etc. Or maybe car wise, you could look at something like an Intrepid, 300M, or something else big-body style.
I can't imagine driving around in something I don't enjoy. I mean, if you really think about it, how long is any child in anyones car at any given time....20 to 25 minutes, if that...Good Luck with what you decide to do!

Re: Considering selling the Z28...opinions?

Well, right now she's driving the camaro and I'm driving a 91 SAAB Turbo Convert. Neither one is great for having a baby in it though. The SAAB I can't sell, it's my fathers. He's letting me drive it for as long as we need it, so we're ok on the driving situation until we find something. My wife LIVES and BREATHES Tahoes, but we can't afford one. We only have $3500 saved up so far, so I'm thinking along the lines of a 91 or so Explorer. V6 engines and lots had 4x4. Plus, parts are cheap and they are roomier than what we have now. A friend of ours has a black 92 Explorer with Leather, 4 inch lift and 31" tires and it's a bad little SUV! If I get her something that's sensible, I can hang on to the camaro and make it my daily again and give my dads car back. But if I can't find something in my price range before school starts, I'll probably just have to suck it up and hand over the keys.
