Post Coming to Ft.Hood a few Q's about Texas and the area.

Well the time is getting near to leave Germany as the Army is sending me to Ft.Hood in about 6 months. I have a few questions for you all...

1. Do they have emissions/inspections testing there or Should I keep my registration in Michigan?

2. Any 1/4 mi tracks within good reach of Ft.Hood?

3. Thinking of getting a N2O kit, how much is N2O by the pound?

4. Dyno in the area?

5. Any of you guys close to the post? Good street racing about?

I dont even have a good idea where exactly Ft.Hood is in Texas, all I know is in the middle.

Thanks, I look forward to getting parts with ease and better competition.
See you all soon,
Jeff

Cool

Hallo Jeff! Guten Tag! Sorry bout that I grew up in Frankfurt Germany thanks to the military and my dad retired to Fort Hood in 92. Well, to just give you some bearings on where you will be located, Fort Hood is pretty much IN Killeen Tx. Killeen has two F-Body clubs (Xtreme F-Bodys and H.O.T F-Bodys) About 20 miles East is Temple, Tx (Where I live) We have one F-Body club (Temple F-Body: http://temple.fbody.com) Not to bad mouth the Killeen clubs, some members are really cool and they've got some SWEET cars. The only problems I have w/ them are that lots of their members are always talking sh*t about other F-Bodies, F-Body clubs, and seem to have little or no respect for other people's feelings. That's why I started Temple F-Body. Anywho, Austin is to the South (About an 80 mile trip on I-35) and Waco is about 40 mins North on I-35.

"Do they have emissions/inspections testing there or Should I keep my registration in Michigan?"

- Yes, they have inspections here. It's not too bad though, my Z passed w/ my cut out not even capped off!

"Any 1/4 mi tracks within good reach of Ft.Hood?"

- Yep, Temple/Academy Dragstrip is about 8 miles outside of Temple. Our club goes every Friday, you're welcome to join us if you'd like and we can show you how to get there.

"Thinking of getting a N2O kit, how much is N2O by the pound?"

- That I'm not sure of. I know there are some performance shops in Waco and Austin, I'd check w/ some people who live around there.

"Dyno in the area?"

- Yes, Austin

"Any of you guys close to the post? Good street racing about?"

- I'm about 20 miles away in Temple. But I'm always going to Killeen. Some of our members live on post. For street racing, WS Young in Killeen and 31st street in Temple are pretty popular.

That's pretty much it about central Texas....If you'd like I can get you some info when you arrive down here for the clubs in Killeen and you can see if their clubs suit your taste. E-mail me if you have any questions! Later,

Thanks for the help man. It sounds like there is alot to do with my car there. Any I was kind of dreading coming there cause of the heat but it actually sounds kind of fun. I should be there in march.I have a few more questions if you dont mind...

Is there alot of apartments around there or nice trailerparks with a lot? I hear all kinds of nightmares about trying to find housing there, I also have pets. How much is the avg. rent? Are there any universities in the area? My wife wants to go to be a nurse, any that offer that? What about a school for performance auto mechanics/machinist? Like how to port heads, rebuild motors?

Thanks man, I kinda look forward to coming there now. I look forward to meeting you and checking out your club. I will look at the website.

Tried to email you but it didnt work...

Jeff

Jeff,

No prob man, glad I could help. Texas isn't really that bad. It's kinda nice to have warmer climates for most of the year. The seasons go as follows; Dec. - Feb. is winter. Kinda cold, MAY snow, but usually hangs around the 40's. From March to May the weather usually goes from the 60's to 80's. June-August is the killer though. Usually in the 90's. Then from Septemeber to November, it cools down to the 60's/70's again.

"Is there alot of apartments around there or nice trailerparks with a lot? I hear all kinds of nightmares about trying to find housing there, I also have pets. How much is the avg. rent?"

- Yes, there are quite a few apartments and trailer parks. I'm not quite sure on the rent though. But I'll ask around.

"Are there any universities in the area? My wife wants to go to be a nurse, any that offer that? What about a school for performance auto mechanics/machinist? Like how to port heads, rebuild motors?"

- There are a WHOLE lot of schools around here. Killeen has Central Texas College, Temple has Temple College (That's where I'll be next year!!) There are some VERY, VERY good automotive colleges in Waco. World class stuff. If you're looking to learn, we've got sooooo many grade A auto techs in our club. Tim Hawk, Steve (Smurf), and Jeff (Thumpy) to name a few. They could teach you a lot of what you want to know!

- Try my club e-mail addy: TechCam97@team.camaroz28.com

P.S. - The club URL was messed up, here's the correct one: http://temple.fbody.com

Keep in mind one important thing........Copperas Cove, a little town just west to Killeen is NOT the place to test speed limits !!!!! The main strip through town is a perpetual speed trap where you may find yourself pretty often as there are quite a few businesses there !

- Very, very, true! That's where I was raised (Born in 84 and came back in 93) The cops there are d*cks and they loooooooove to hand out tickets left and right. Watch yourself and keep a cool head on Highway 190. (The road that amood was talking about)

I ETS'd out of the military at Fort Hood about 2 years ago, and have since taken up permanent residence in Florence which is about 15 miles South of Killeen towards Austin (I have to have the peace and quite of the country and space) The guy who said the above about the two F-Body clubs in Killeen pretty much hit it on the head, hence I am not a member of either one, though I have heard that Extreme F-Body went through management changes and actually registered the name. The people around here are friendly and the cops aren't too bad, just doing thier jobs, which can be difficult at times I'm sure. If you have any questions you can E-Mail me, I still actually work on Ft. Hood as a defense contractor. Mathew.Miller-nonTRW@TRW.com.

Sorry didn't read the posts about housing too well.

The housing list on Ft. Hood when I was in was about a 8 mounth wait for a two bedroom, but there are the good housing areas and the bad housing areas. The nice ones are Montague Village and Liberty Village, they have there own yards and you can rent a chain link fence for I believe 20 a month. Outside in Killeen and the surrounding areas it all pretty much depends on where you live. Copperas Cove has turned into a **** hole whichever way you slice it and dice it, starting from about 2 years ago. If you go through it you have Kempner and Lampases anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes away, respectively. If you want peace and quite, that is one of the places that you can find it, looking at about 500 plus for rent. Harker Heights and east into Nolanville and Belton towards Temple is not really that bad, cost of living is considerable more higher especially in Belton (where they actually try to keep out the riff raff). I live in Florence which is extremely quite, but I am also 15 min. away from everything but a general store and a gas station. I love it I don't hear cars going by boom booming all night and I fall asleep to crickets and owls every night. I have a house, and don't know of any apartments, but there might be some mobile homes, and guessing it would be about 700 plus for rent.

"Well the time is getting near to leave Germany as the Army is sending me to Ft.Hood in about 6 months. I have a few questions for you all..."

What a coincidence. I had the same thing happen to me and my dad. My dad was stationed in Griesheim, and then stationed in Ft. Hood.

I don't live with him though, I live in S.A.
I do go to his house ALOT though. So I know the area, too. As far as homes, there is a nice set in Killeen where my dad and a SLEW of military people stay. Its called Gary Carother's Homes and I think they are from the 80's or 90's. Either way, theya re some pimped out houses. Most if not all of them are one stories. They are custom-built to my knowledge.

To the guy that lived in Germany for a while...

What did I say? Your german isn't so good anymore. (for those who don't know)

I just said I don't suppose that anyone here speaks German. Literally translated: Go I right in assuming that no one here speaks German?

"Mein Deutsch ist nicht mehr so gut" auch.

WIth no one to speak it to, My memory of it is becoming lost, too.

I apologize, he was stationed in Darmstadt, like you. We lived in Griesheim, which is as you said like 10 minutes away. He ran the hospital there Darmstadt. He's an E8 (Master Sergeant) in the army. He's an NCO that's been in the military for 20 years.

I thought you said something like that, but I wasn't sure. My german is pretty rusty as well. I haven't lived there since 92

Ft. Hood sucks......I feel for you. I loved Germany though, spent three years in Baumholder.....with a little too much time down the road from the baunhoft (train station?) in Frankfurt. He, he....
