I would consider a 4th gen an upgrade if it is in similar or better shape.
I don't know much about 3rd gens, but i would go with a 350 unless you plan on swaping out motors. IMO, the wiring would worry me, I am having some minor bugs with my 90 Mustang.
You can find a 1st gen, but look out for body work, it can be the biggest cost.
2nd gen... Uh, unless you get an early 70's model... the newer ones didn't look as good IMO. But you can pick probably pick up the newer ones cheaper than the early 70's style.
I always wanted a late 70's TA, just so I could drive it around sometimes like smokey and the bandit
. Same thing on the body work... And the late 70's early 80's Z28s looked ok, in black of course
.
How bout a Fox body rustang? Cheap and easy to work on, and IMO they are superior to the 3rd gen F-body. They also hold re-sale value well. They are actually going up in price.
If it was me looking for something old I would go for whatever I could find that I liked, in good shape. I wouldn't go out looking for one model, you might pass up a nice reasonable priced chevelle or mustang or cutless, or Le Mans etc.. etc..
Unless you have the money, I don't, the 1st gen F-bods pull in top buck. One day I'll have one though

4th gen LT1s are getting so damn cheap, in Houstn chron I saw 2 TAs, a 93 and a 94, both under $5K. A higher mile 4th gen LT1 is a good bet, great fater market, tons of used parts, tons of stuff people sell still new in boxes, mainly because they buy LS1s or other cars.
