Cameras coming to Houston-Beware

HOUSTON -- Red-light runners beware -- the city will be keeping a closer eye on you starting next month, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

On Nov. 1, five Houston-area intersections will get stoplight cameras. However, officials would not disclose which intersections would be first to get the technology.

The cameras will capture the license plates of drivers who run red lights. Until January, drivers will only be mailed warnings. After that, red-light violators will get a civil citation, a $75 ticket, in the mail.

City officials said drivers should expect to see stoplight cameras at more and more intersections.

"We'll probably start with about 10, then spread to at least 50 at the high incidents of accidents intersections we identify," Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt said.

The city plans to test equipment from five separate vendors and make a final decision in December.

The company that wins the contract will share generated ticket revenue with the city.

Anything to help bring in "lazy" funds is the wave of the future. I heard Austin has it worse...oh well, I try not to run red lights, and I wear my seatbelt. When I drove to Georgia, I got a ticket when I was in Alabama by an unmanned radar detector...and there are no warnings with those! Thanks for the heads up!

not really worried about it since nearly all the states in the US that have installed them have already removed them. Because people were so concerned that they would get a ticket for even rolling through a yellow light t was causing more accidents and probelms than they solved. So should be interesting as to what will ahppen to them if we do put them up.

This isn't new to Katy. They have Stoplight cams everywhere already.

In theory, this is not a bad thing. Having a more urgent sense of driving like you're supposed to is good. However, its all about revenue. Since that is the case, it pisses me off.
