any salvage yards near houston known to stock Lt1's?
i need to replace my 96 Lt1 with another 96 or 97 motor. i've found 93-95 motors but i'd rather get an engine i can just drop in with no modifications. plus 3 out of the 4 i found were iron headed anyways. anyone know of any yards around here that get them often? thanks

I road race a 96 Firebird.
The aluminum headed LT1 motors are becoming quite scarce. Best I can figure is the street rod crowd was scarfing them up as fast as they became available.
Finding a good one, ready to run, will be hard to do. remember, these motors were in performance cars and the newest ones are now 10 years old.
Last November I bought a motor from a guy in Houston which was supposed to have a bad lifter. Turned out the pickup tube fell off the oil pump and the bottom end oil starved. All bearing, and journals are toast.

Re: any salvage yards near houston known to stock Lt1's?
thanks for the reply mitch,
i hear you about a used engine, you never know what condition it is really in and you might have to rebuild anyways. my other option is to do a stock rebuild with what i have now, but it's probably going to take longer than i would like (although it might take longer to find a whole engine). i'll search one more week, if i don't find one i'll head to the machine shop. thanks again for the reply.
