SEPTEMBER 16th, 2008 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 1968 565 Camaro 0.427 9.107 144.49
RU Tim Roberts, St. Charles, MO 1971 540 Cutlass 0.214 9.421 155.13

Tim “Moose” Mallicoat earned his seventh event title of the year while winning his twenty-fourth career trophy in his second straight victory in the Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Closing in on the opportunity to become the program‘s first two-time season champion, the defending titleholder took advantage of the second consecutive week of virtually perfect weather conditions to clock his second-quickest run en route to the winner‘s circle. Surprisingly, it was that same September weather which made the final round a much closer contest than expected.

Atmospheric conditions were almost identical to the September 9 event. With temperatures ranging from 70 to 57 degrees and with extremely high barometric pressure, the only significant difference was the heavy 89% humidity which surrounded the final rounds. The worst corrected elevation of the event was 986 feet above sea level when early timed trials began; by the end of the event, the “air” had plummeted to only 109 feet above sea level. Another large field of entries produced the fifth quickest Super Sixteen field with a “bump spot” of 11.14 seconds. A staggering number of competitors recorded career-best elapsed times and speeds including an incredible forty-six of the top fifty qualifiers and no less than eighty-one of the top one hundred qualifiers!

Traction was plentiful as evidenced by a total of five broken rearends during the race. In fact, the official qualifying period started fourteen minutes late when, on the last pass of early timed trials, Trevor Nickel’s Mulberry Grove, Illinois-based ’89 350 Camaro spit its left rear axle completely out of the housing just off the starting line! The GIR track crew spent an inordinate amount of time grooming the starting line and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

In the previous week’s similar conditions, Mallicoat’s naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch “Hellraiser” ’68 Camaro had recorded its best run ever at 8.53 seconds and 158.78 miles per hour. This week, Mallicoat’s first and only qualifying run came thirty-five minutes into the qualifying session and verified his previous performance increase with a strong 8.57/158.22. Mallicoat retired to the pit area while the performance parade continued for another ninety minutes. His closest competition came from a surprising source.

Tim Roberts, whose show-quality 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass has endured traction problems throughout the season, made repeated attempts to get to the finish line under power but, as in previous SCSS appearances, struggled when the car would simply “blow the tires off” at the 330-feet mark. Using an F1R ProCharger centrifugal supercharger atop a 540 cubic inch Chevy engine, the heavyweight Olds has been a contender at Midwestern street car events on slicks but has found the transition to D.O.T. tires more than a challenge. Roberts’ first pass found him lifting off the throttle several times to get the tires to stick, resulting in a 10.05/149.55. His second effort included a respectable 1.36-second best sixty-feet elapsed time but was ruined by downtrack spinning. The St. Charles, Missourian, found himself on the starting line for one final attempt with only four minutes remaining in qualifying but, after a 1.35 “sixty”, managed to keep the blue Cutlass glued to the track to halftrack while posting a 5.72/124.10 eighth-mile. For the first time on street tires, Roberts rode the beast to the stripe under power, clocking a best-ever 8.85/149.23 to fall second in the field behind Mallicoat.

Also making the top four was a stunning 9.84/136.70 career-best by Travis Smalley’s burgundy 2003 Mustang which was easily the quickest modular-motored run in SCSS history. Tim “Kirko” Kirkpatrick’s flamed green 393-inch ’88 Mustang debuted a PowerGlide transmission and, with a 10.09/135.32 previous best, blasted to a 9.87/136.46! Smalley and Kirkpatrick became the fortieth and forty-first members of the SCSS 10-Second Club with their efforts while Smalley also entered the 130 MPH Club as its sixty-fourth member.

When eliminations began, Roberts was confident his traction problems were over but, when he launched against Kirkpatrick in the opening match of the semi-finals, the blue Cutlass once again fried the tires and Roberts shut down the engine. Kirkpatrick, however, clocked a 6.14/116.17 at the eighth-mile, more than fourteen hundredths of second quicker and seven miles per hour faster than on his 9.87/136 before lifting to a 10.30/99.26 in disgust; Kirkpatrick redlighted by a mere thirty-one thousandths of second and handed what would have been a guaranteed win to Roberts! In the other half of the semis, Smalley’s Ford stumbled to a 10.23/133.68 against Mallicoat’s solid 8.63/157.95.

“There’s no doubt about it. He HAD me!”, said a shocked Roberts, referring to Kirkpatrick’s foul. The tenth member of the SCSS 8-Second Club prepared for the final round in front of the main grandstands well aware of his reprieve. “I’m going to have to figure out some way to keep this car hooked up. I can only go back to what I did on the 8.85 pass and hope it works again”. In the title bout, Roberts took a substantial two-tenths of a second advantage off the starting line but eased into the throttle a bit more conservatively than he’d planned; his 1.70-second “sixty“ was quickly eaten up by Mallicoat‘s 1.27. As the black Camaro streaked away from the Olds, Mallicoat suddenly found himself fighting the car just past halftrack when the Chevy darted toward the wall. Mallicoat recovered in time to clock a 9.10/144.49 while Roberts stayed in pursuit, hitting a 9.42 while becoming the eleventh member of the SCSS 150 MPH Club with a best-ever 155.13 speed.

“There was some dew down there”, said a wide-eyed Mallicoat during trophy presentations in front of the main grandstands. “I definitely had to drive it and it went all over the place for a second. The humidity is so high that I thought we might have a problem with it but it didn’t really show up until a thousand feet or so. I hate surprises like that!”. Roberts, meanwhile was satisfied with his progress. “Few folks realize I’ve owned this car since 1984; I actually drove it to high school every day. After it had about 160,000 miles on it, I decided to make it a tube-chassised car. Mark Lynn, who originally worked for Jerry Bickel Race Cars, actually built the chassis. The body is still all steel and the car now weighs about 3200 pounds. It’s licensed and I drive it quite a bit. It has a PowerGlide transmission with an overdrive unit to make it manageable enough for the street. I use a little 850 cfm four-barrel built by C&S Specialities in a blow-through format on the ProCharger and it works great. Believe it or not, the paint is over twenty years old!”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Tim “Moose” Mallicoat hasn’t wrapped up the 2008 SCSS Season Title yet but, by the end of the next event, he will probably be the first two-time series point champion. The “Moose” broke his tie with Tony Huff for most final round appearances and now leads the SCSS division with thirty finals….Bill Silva, crewchief for the absent Tony Huff, said the team’s Dale Huff Motorsports ‘57 Chevy Bel-Air will most likely return next week with its engine damage from the August 26 meet repaired…Mike McCombs, runner-up at the recent NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in Joliet, Illinois, pushed his bronze ‘87 418 Mustang to a career-best 10.03/137.72 during qualifying and, during late timed trials, unleashed his first nine-second D.O.T. pass, a 9.90/135.10...Andrew Connors put his 2000 Camaro Z28 in the Super Sixteen field with a best-ever 11.13/122.96 and then recorded an incredible 10.20/133.76 in late timed trials…Charles Bewen’s blue smallblock ‘68 Firebird ran a career-best by a quarter-second at 10.09/135.16...Jeremy Heizer’s wellknown green ‘91 402 GTA clocked a tremendous 10.25/132.46 best…Curtis Paulfrey, absent since his July 1 engine explosion, returned with a raceready 502-inch big block in his yellow ‘68 Camaro and improved a half-second to a best-ever 10.33/128.95. Said Paulfrey, “It’s built from what was left of the original 496 motor; all I could salvage were the block and the heads”…After last week’s 9.95/145.28 blast in late timed trials, Chad Barton’s Redline Performance Motorsports 2001 Corvette gained official entry to the 10-Second and 130 MPH Clubs with his 10.69/130.04 qualifying efforts before destroying the rearend…How about this for a sudden improvement? John Bogard’s ’91 302 Mustang ran a best of 13.35/100.83 in qualifying but, in late timed trials, ran 10.39/136.80!…Members from several different Missouri and Illinois Corvette Clubs once again congregated at Gateway for their own SCSS action. No less than eighteen ‘Vettes took part in the event with Barton’s silver Z06 being the quickest at 10.69/130.04 followed by Ryan Antonovich at 11.60/126.47. Nearly ever ‘Vette driver clocked a career-best with the most hard-fought being the 11.98/113.96 by Mark Yehling, who has been trying to get an eleven-second timeslip in his stock ‘97 model for several seasons…There were also a total of twelve late model Pontiac GTOs in competition. Although none qualified for the Super Sixteen, Chance Tozer’s Decatur, Illinois-based ‘05 was the quickest at 12.27/118.59 and Michael Hatleli’s ‘05 earned the group’s top speed on a 12.32/120.70 pass…For the second week in a row, the event’s closest drag race came from a pair of Corvettes. Joe Hatleli’s ‘06 Z06 and Antonovich squared off during qualifying and Hatleli’s fifteen hundredths holeshot was the deciding factor since both cars ran 11.742 seconds!…There are four SCSS events remaining on the 2008 GIR calender.

SEPTEMBER 16th, 2008 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Mike Bobelak, Ballwin, MO 1996 172 Golf GTi 0.747 11.948 127.82
RU Dan Harris, St. Louis, MO 2004 232 Mustang 0.167 12.687 106.06

Since winning the first St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown of the 2008 season back on April 1, Mike Bobelak has been on a mission. Testing his front-wheel-drive ‘96 Volkswagen Golf GTi on a regular basis, the ex-motocross star from Hawaii had his sights set on the SCSS Six-Cylinder speed record of Rob Nolan which stood for over two years at 124.56 mph. With STSS bests of 12.28/121, Bobelak finally pushed his VW to the breaking point during an August test session, snapping one of the car’s original axles. During the time Bobelak was down for repairs, unheralded Troy Doolady finally broke Nolan’s record with a 131.10 mph blast from his turbocharged ‘87 Buick Regal. When Bobelak returned to the track, he was still hunting for the six-banger record even if it had been knocked seven miles per hour higher.

By the time qualifying ended, Bobelak had, at least, murdered all STSS marks for front-wheel-drive sixes. Although it pitched an intercooler line during one of its efforts, the black Polk Audio turbo’d VW streaked to best of 11.63 at a whopping 126.47 mph to lead the field and was substantially quicker than any other qualifier. Behind Bobelak was 2007 GIR High School Eliminator season champion Dan “Iceman” Harris who, after dominating the HS program with his 232-inch V6-powered Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe, stuffed an identical power plant, (with nitrous oxide injection), into a 2004 Mustang for the ’08 season. Harris clocked a best of 12.85/104.89 to stay ahead of the radical 231-inch Buick Riviera V6-powered Pontiac Fiero of Steven Bunge, (13.78/100.92), Sean Kennedy’s turbocharged 231 V6 ’87 Regal, (13.85/101.38), and Michael Zeller’s supercharged ’06 Cobalt SS, (13.92/101.94).

Harris, a remarkably competent bracket racer, knew a holeshot was his only hope in the championship dash. The St. Louisan, however, was aided by Bobelak’s extremely late reaction time and Harris gained more than a half-second off the line! The turbo VW was behind the Ford at every progressive point; even at the thousand-feet mark, the V6 Mustang was still ahead by 26.88 feet. It took every bit of power from the FWD Golf to make up the difference in the final one hundred feet where Bobelak finally overcame Harris’ holeshot with a career-best 127.82 mph charge to win by 30.12 feet. A stumbling 11.94 almost failed to make it past Harris’ best-ever 12.68/106.06.

“I kept waiting to see him come by down near the finish line”, said Harris during trophy presentations, “and at the very last possible second he finally came whooshing by me. I didn’t expect to be in front of him for so long. I didn’t know where he was!”. Bobelak knew he nearly threw away his second victory of the season. “I was only concerned about getting the speed record. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!”, he laughed. “I definitely was late and it was a lot closer than it should’ve been. It took a while to get some replacement axles and I lost a lot of time waiting for them. I still think the car can eventually get the record, though. It‘s certainly getting closer to the number”.

SEPTEMBER 16th, 2008 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Hal Marshall, Collinsville, IL 1986 406 S-10 0.519 10.095 131.10
RU Raymond Arthur, Edwardsville, IL 1993 355 S-10 0.505 10.709 113.97

You’d never know he was gone for three months. Taking his second straight win in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown, Hal Marshall certainly hasn’t missed a beat since his return to action in his red-and-white S-10 pickup. The veteran earned an unprecedented twenty-seventh victory in his thirty-seventh final round of the seventy-two completed Super Truck events. After qualifying with a stout 10.13/130.75, Marshall watched as August 26 winner Kurtis Pitts struggled with his 421-inch ‘93 S-10, falling four tenths of a second from his normal pace to an 11.17/126.60 best, At that point, Ray Arthur took over.

Arthur, best known for his 9.0-second “Suspicion” ‘67 Camaro, also owns the “S-10 Revenge” ’93 Chevy which has been driven to four victories in 2008 by partner John Brawley. After killing the transmission in his Camaro on September 9, however, Arthur decided to jump in the truck to gain points toward the 2008 SCSS championship and, for the first time, put the “spray” to the little truck. “With this being John’s first year in the truck”, said Arthur, “I’ve kept him away from using the bottle. The truck has still gone 11.40s but I figured it’s time to see what it can really do”. The truck’s true potential was clearly shown in a surprising 10.67/125.76 which not only made the final round of the Super Truck Showdown but qualified in the Super Sixteen, as well.

In the finale, Hal gave up a slight holeshot but thundered to a 10.09/135.16 to drop Arthur’s 10.70/113.97 which trailed a fogbank through the shutdown area. When Arthur didn’t return in front of the grandstands for his trophy, Marshall feared the worst, noting, “With Ray using the nitrous, Lord only knows how much he was spraying”. Arthur finally appeared to get his trophy and explained, “It was just the seal on the radiator overflow tank. It got a little hot down there but I didn’t know it was actually leaking. It’s nothing serious. I didn’t blow it up…yet!”.
