JULY 24th, 2007 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 1968 565 Camaro 0.095 8.643 156.94
RU Daryl Jauernig, St. Louis, MO 1989 306 Mustang -0.183 (foul) 9.225 147.81

After a twenty-one day hiatus, the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series resumed at Gateway International Raceway with the continuation of the most incredible display of domination in series history. Tim “Moose” Mallicoat stretched his unprecedented win streak to ten consecutive event titles while inching closer to Sam Moore’s long-standing SCSS Elapsed Time Record. Even one of the most highly-anticipated final-round battles of the season failed to threaten the renowned black naturally-aspirated ‘68 Camaro’s perfect final round record.

After a rainout on July 10th and the scheduled closure of GIR’s dragstrip while the NASCAR Busch Series took over the oval track during the week of July 17th, magnificent weather drew the second-largest turnout of the 2007 season. With a high temperature of only 83 degrees and a low of 68 degrees, the corrected elevation fell to 1107 feet above sea level, the best since June 5th. Combined with an exceptionally sticky track, the conditions produced a surprisingly quick “bump spot” of 11.84 seconds for the Super Sixteen field. Moreover, the top eight qualifiers represented the second-quickest “top half” ever for a SCSS event at 10.49 seconds. Fully half of nearly two hundred entries ran quicker than 14.00 seconds!

Mallicoat had been testing almost weekly during GIR’s Wednesday night program in an attempt to calm his Camaro after switching to a bigger carburetor in June. Near the end of early timed trials, the Illinois pilot launched to a smooth 8.74-second, 156.61 mph blast to prove that he’d regained the car’s previous consistency.

Although the bump spot dropped quickly once the official qualifying period began, it was Ray Arthur’s “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro which drew the first big crowd response. Only twenty minutes into the session, Arthur launched the red Chevy and legged it to the finish line despite a persistent electrical problem which almost caused Ray to abort the pass. Instead, the Camaro thundered to an amazing 9.98 at 135.43 mph, the 53-year-old’s first nine-second pass, to become the twenty-fifth member of the SCSS Nine-Second Club! “I just put a new Edelbrock manifold on it”, said an elated Arthur after the pass, “and I knew it would gain some power but that miss was really bad. It seemed like it was running out of fuel at about a thousand feet downtrack but then it came alive again. Not many people realize it but I’m still using a stock distributor and points and I think that‘s going to have to change real soon”. Only four pairs later, reigning SCSS season champ Tony Buhl’s Mustang pulled to the line. Sporting new sponsorship from Jeremy Mifflin Racing Fabrication, the maroon supercharged smallblock Mustang immediately stole Arthur’s pole position with a 9.94/139.52.

Mallicoat let the rest of the field qualify for another thirty minutes before he unloaded an amazingly consistent 8.74/156.63 to grab the lead permanently. Surprisingly, the black Camaro returned late in qualifying for an unusual third attempt and, while the 8.69-second ET which illuminated the scoreboard was brutal, it was the shut-off 149.12 mph speed which drew astonishment from the fans. Ironically, the real shock came in the numbers the spectators couldn’t see. The run was initiated by a great, (but not record-breaking), 1.28-second sixty-feet ET. However, the 3.598-second 330-feet ET tied Mallicoat’s own SCSS record for that distance and, most importantly, the eight-mile elapsed time, a 5.551-second blast, was five thousandths of a second quicker than Sam Moore’s SCSS record, clocked on an 8.58-second pass!

The crowd was in for another surprise. With only four minutes remaining in the official qualifying session, the dark purple ‘89 Mustang of St. Louisan Daryl Jauernig pulled out from under the tower. A late arrival, Jauernig was fresh from a win at an Outlaw Street event at I-57 Dragway in Benton, Illinois, running consistent 5.9-second eighth-mile passes with his nitrous oxide-aided smallblock Ford. With only one chance to make the Final Four, Jauernig, (pronounced “journey”), screamed to a 6.01/118.45 eighth before, in typical fashion, he got on the brakes to coast past the finish line in 9.93 seconds at only 105.47 mph!

“We came here to race The Moose”, announced Jauernig after qualifying ended. “We ran really good at Benton even shutting off a little early each run but I figured it was time somebody came out to give the Camaro a real race”. A three-time SCSS champion and five-time finalist, Jauernig has been in at least one final round in all four years of the series. Assisted by two other four-year SCSS alumni, Dave Odenahl and Greg “Hook-and-Ladder” Boschert, Jauernig headed back to the pits to prepare for eliminations.

While checking the car, Jauernig spotted a broken muffler mount under the Ford. Grabbing a cordless drill to make the necessary repairs, Jauernig was dismayed to find the batteries in the drill were dead. A quick canvas of the pits turned up no replacements so, in true drag racer fashion, Jaunernig, Odenahl and Boschert came up with a temporary, if somewhat implausible, solution. Dissecting the drill, the trio hooked the drill’s wires to a set of jumper cables and, with the cables hooked to the battery of a nearby truck, were able to create a massively “corded” cordless drill with which they fixed the problem only minutes before the first round of eliminations!

Jauernig met Arthur in the first battle of the semi-finals. A two-tenths of a second holeshot was probably enough to stop the Camaro but Arthur ran into even more electrical problems and stumbled to a 10.49/129.43. Jauernig hit a consistent 6.02/119.98 eighth-mile before coasting to an equally consistent 9.94 at only 106 mph. Meanwhile, Mallicoat was getting serious; driving around Tony Buhl’s two-tenths holeshot and 10.01/138.71 in the first sixty feet, The Moose hit record progressives all the way to the 1000-feet mark beginning with a 1.264 60-feet ET, a 3.590 330-footer and a 5.549/125.30 eighth en route to an 8.68 at 155.81 mph.

“There’s a whole lot more there”, said Boschert, alluding to the fact that Jaurnig had yet to unleash the full potential of the Mustang Muscle Ford. Prior to the championship dash, Jaunerig debated changing his strategy and finally decided to use his transmission brake to leave the line in the final round. After a slight delay reloading the nitrous canisters, (during which Mallicoat got the order to begin his burnout before Jauernig was even under power), the purple Mustang finally staged against the all-conquering black Camaro. In an instant, Jauernig found out…the hard way…that the finger is substantially quicker than the foot; a redlight start by eighteen hundreds of a second ended the battle but not the run. Mallicoat was loaded for bear, however. Ungodly numbers of 1.254, 3.571, and 5.524/126.00 preceded a career-best 8.64 at 156.94 mph for his eleventh career SCS victory. Jauernig hit a 5.93/120.49 eighth and clocked his best pass ever, as well, at 9.22/147.81.

“Even a perfect light wouldn’t have helped me”, said Jaunerig after the run. “Moose’s Camaro is definitely impressive for a naturally-aspirated car. Between Dave ‘Pee-Wee’ Meredith, Mustang Muscle, and the guys at Lethal1320.com, we can probably get some more out of this car and make it a bit tighter next time“. Mallicoat, on the other hand, is now within six hundredths of the ten-month-old SCSS ET Record of Sam Moore and Bill Silva. “We’ll probably be out testing again tomorrow night”, said a grinning Mallicoat. “That record is getting’ mighty close!”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: So many drivers clocked their best efforts during late timed trials that it became obvious the Super Sixteen bump spot could have been close to the 11.10 record. The weather conditions were so impressive that many racers improved several tenths of a second…Tony Huff, whose season is quickly becoming a certified disaster, qualified brother Dale Huff’s show-quality 510-cubic inch ‘67 Chevelle but wounded a transmission in the process. Huff, now five points behind Mallicoat in second place, actually lost ground to Tony Buhl and Ray Arthur, both of whom are now tied for third only one point behind Huff…Joe Williams’ year has also been rough. Huff’s teammate made a seriously squirrelly run in early timed trials and shut off early; the yellow bigblock ‘70 Nova never returned during qualifying…Bobby Tarr’s white ‘91 Mustang ran a career-best 133.91 mph during qualifying…Steve George’s black ’71 Nova became the 134th member of the 120 MPH Club…Mickey Boyer’s red ’69 Nova became the 133rd member of the same Club but, after a 10.83/128.13 qualifier, the Imperial, Missouri, smallblock Chevy hit a late timed trial of 10.78 at only 94 mph. The 6.31/112.59 eighth-mile numbers showed 9.90/135 potential…With a freshly-certified chassis and roll cage, Chris Gosch returned to the wheel of Bill Stewart’s Bunker Hill, Illinois-based 2007 Shelby Cobra GT500 Mustang. The blue-on-white 450-horsepower beauty, sponsored by Ted’s Motorcycle World in Alton, IL, ran 11.34/129.09...Ben Nungester’s ’69 Camaro showpiece ran a best-ever 131.15 mph during qualifying…Sixteen-year-old Kevin Linebaugh qualified on the bump spot at 11.84/114.82 with his dad’s blue ’70 383 Roadrunner but actually recorded an 11.63/118.13 in early timed trials…Isaac Sinclair’s smallblock ’72 Chevelle failed to qualify with a 12.14/109 best but dipped to an 11.77/112.62 after qualifying ended…The quickest of the six-cylinders was Aaron Corn’s slick gold ’87 Regal which hit a best-ever 12.95/108.84 on twenty-two-inch rims!…“Heaviest Car of the Event” was easily Jim Sickler’s 4500-pound ’77 Buick Electra; the 455-powered beast still ran 12.31/109.93!…The SCSS program was graced by the presence of “Hundred Grand Dan” Smith and his twelve-second ’79 Chrysler 300C. Smith drove the car to a $100,000 win in late 2006 at the richest non-electronics bracket race of all time in Montgomery, Alabama. He‘s also a multi-time GIR Track Champion...The biggest wheelstands of the night came from Brian Martin’s black ‘85 Mustang which also hit a career-best 11.47/117.78...”Most Expensive Vehicle” was Sean Williamson’s ’99 Mercedes-Benz E55 which sold for $72,290 eight years ago The 5.4 litre Benz ran a best of 14.19/101.01…Aaron Hagen won High School Eliminator for Rockwood Summit H.S. over Drew Skyles’ Mehlville entry in a battle of late-model Firebirds.

JULY 24th, 2007 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Phil Hoback, Collinsville, IL 1993 79 RX7 0.544 11.519 125.01
RU Rick Poepping, Ballwin, MO 2004 231 Grand Prix 0.105 13.466 102.43

After two runners-up, Phil Hoback was definitely due for a victory in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. The Collinsville, Illinois, racer had stunned Tuner fans earlier in the season with 131 mph top-end charges from his turbocharged ‘93 Mazda RX7 but not even Hoback was ready for a half-second improvement from his 11.95 best. In fact, Hoback’s first timed trial was almost his best run ever; an 11.96/123.05 in the worst air of the event certainly gave an indication of things to come. Midway through the official qualifying period, Hoback’s overcautious launch gave way to plenty of traction and an amazing 11.49 at 124.96 mph to lead the STSS field by two full seconds!

“The big 130 mph speeds came when I was running a different tune with a whole lot more boost”, said Hoback, “but now I‘ve got some decent tires and I’m working more toward a better launch. I have to be careful, though. I’m still using a basically stock rearend and it’s fragile”.

Past STSS runner-up Rick Poepping managed to win the battle to determine an opponent for Hoback. The Missourian’s uniquely-hued ’04 Grand Prix GTP hit a best of 13.49/101.81 to barely outqualify fellow Pontiac GTP camapaigner Tom Rockholm, (a best-ever 13.581/102.66), Jason Mehne’s ’04 Neon SRT-4, (a best-ever 13.582/103.70), Mani Oteri’s ‘02 Subaru WRX, (a best-ever 13.85/101.43), and Chadlen Patrick’s ’92 Nissan 240SX, (you guessed it…a best-ever 13.90/101.15).

Poepping had been frustrated by a mysterious noise from his Pontiac since the beginning of the season but a trip to specialists in Michigan found the problem, (a silicon obstruction in the intake manifold), and made the GTP brutally consistent. “It may not be close but I’ll try to make a race of it”, Poepping told announcer “Radical Rich Tivitt” before the final round. True to his word, Peopping gained a massive holeshot in the trophy dash but Hoback’s rotary blasted to an 11.51/125.01 to win his first STSS title. It was the first win for a rotary since Eric Francosky’s season-opening victory but Poepping’s second career runner-up marked the third consecutive event in which a supercharged Pontiac front-wheel-drive six-cylinder raced for the trophy. Poepping, a member of the St. Louis Club Grand Prix.com team, admitted that, after three runs within three hundredths of a second, “maybe it’s time to start bracket racing this thing!”. Hoback was happy just to finally get a win with his Izzy’s Custom Cages Mazda. “I’ve got to return to school in Florida in a few weeks”, said Hoback, “so I’ve only got a few more chances to race here at Gateway. I’ll be back next week to try to do it again!”.

JULY 24th, 2007 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Allen Hannel, Caseyville, IL 1986 383 S-10 0.554 10.261 129.14
RU Mike Williamson, Wentzville, MO 2000 330 Lightning 0.135 13.808 74.54

For the second straight event, Allen “Crabby” Hannel met Mike Williamson in the final of the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown and, for the second straight event, “Crabby” took the win. Hannel is now unbeaten in four outings with Hal Marshall‘s nitrous oxide-aided white 383-inch ‘86 S-10. After qualifying at a surprisingly slow 10.42/127.82, Hannel stepped up to a 10.26 in the title bout to stop Williamson’s amazing yellow Ford Lightning.

After an astounding 11.07/125.30 in the July 3rd final round, Williamson qualified at 11.22/120.33 ahead of a trio of Lightnings driven by Dave Lafferty, (a career-best 12.52/110.84), Larry King, (12.88/107.89), and Ed Kramer, (a best-ever 13.18/103.64).

Williamson coasted across the finish line in the final round having given up the chase against Hannel after a new tune produced tons of tire spin. “I tried something different for the last round and it was just too much”, said Williamson, “and I knew it would never recover enough to catch him”. Hannel was simply glad the winningest Tuesday night vehicle finally came back around to its standard performance. “For some reason, it just didn’t run well tonight”, said “Crabby” while accepting his fourth trophy, “but it went back to normal in the final round. I guess it’s okay because we never found anything wrong with it. Whatever it was, I’m glad it’s gone!“.
