Winter storage question

I am storing my Camaro in my unheated garage (which means it is usually pretty cold out there) this winter & was going to hook up the battery to my 2 amp trickle charger. Couple of questions before I do it.
1) Do I need to unhook the battery?

2) If I unhook it, isn't there some kind of security code I have to have in order for it to not lock up?

3)once I get all of that accomplished, do I keep it hooked up all winter or should I just charge it once a month or something to keep it warm?

#1 seems like a dumb question, but I am afraid of screwing something up with these security systems that Chevy installed into these cars.

Re: Winter storage question

I dont think you should need to disconnect the battery from the car to store it. if you want to anyway the only sercurity system that will be effected is on the radio, it's called theftlock, and I think that feature can be turned on or off. If it is activated you will need the 4 digit code to unlock the radio after you reconnect the battery. If you dont know the code you might be able to change it just turn the theftlock off before you disconnent the battery.

But If you disconnect the battery and dont have the code you will have to take it to a dealer to get it unlocked.

I would read the instructions with the trickle charger to find out if you should leave it connected all winter. I dont know what's best for the battery. It would proably be best to take the battery out and store it at room temp.

Re: Winter storage question

Thanks for the input. I would hate to take the battery out, as I do like to go out about every three weeks or so & start her up & let her run for about ten minutes. I also put it in reverse & back up about 3 feet & then put it in drive & move it back up again. I just like the idea of getting her juices flowing a little bit. I think my battery charger will be overkill, so I am going to buy one made just for storage that automatically switches to a "float" mode when the battery is fully charged. I HATE not being able to drive her....this is killing me!!

Leave the battry in and just disconnect it. Won't hurt anything. The battery will last all winter and will not have to charge it at all. I would start it up 1 time a month and drive it around the block. Also a good idea to put some moth ball in it just to help keep the mice away.

Re: Winter storage question

I went ahead & went to Wal-Mart & spent $20 on a battery maintainer. Works great & I don't have to disconnect the battery...unless I plan on moving the car
