Will Z28 exhaust work on a '96 Camaro?
Will Z28 exhaust work on a '96 Camaro?
I am thinking about getting a V-6 Camaro to cut down on my gas costs, plus I can get one for about $3000.
What I was wondering is if I bought the stock Z28 exhaust of ebay, would I be able to hook it up and use it without any other modifications? Are there any downfalls to doing this? I just don't really like the one little brown pipe on the right side, so I'd like to put the Z28 stock exhaust on there to look cooler. I'd use an aftermarket one, but I don't really care about a boost in performance and I really really don't want chrome.
Also, this is off topic, but are there any extremely bad things about 1996 V-6 Camaros with over 100,000 miles? Anything I should look at before considering buying the car would be a big help. I've never bought a used car before, but I can't afford anything new, not even a Kia :-\.

Whats the matter...you don't like the stock exhaust? The "straw" as I like to call it?
A Z28 exhaust will work fine on our car (a very good year Camaro, I might add). You may need new exhaust hangers though. If you can, get the I-pipe off the Z28 as well.
1996 with over 100,000 miles on it...sounds familiar. The only problems I have had with my car was the rear main seal and the intake leaking (both fixed under warranty). That and normal wear and tear parts (spark plugs, wires, water pump, belt, hose).
I would look at how the transmission is...transmission will likely fail before the engine quits on you.

Alright, thank you very much. I've never worked on a car before, so do you think this is a good idea? Do you happen to know an easier alternative? I'm really clueless right now. All I do know is I would like a dual exhaust appearance with the stock rectangular Z28 tips in the very least. If there is an aftermarket kit that comes with all the parts I would need, I'd love to hear about it.

If I bought an aftermarket system, do you think I would be able to take the exhaust tips off and replace them with the rectangular Z28 tips? I know the Z28 tips clamp on, but I don't know about most/any of the aftermarket ones, they could be welded or something?
If you like the stock tips so much, you can always just weld them onto the tailpipes of whichever muffler you go with.
The Z28 take-off is likely going to be the cheapest option though...
Don't ask about sound...everyone has different opinions about the different systems.

Yes, sound is a pretty big issue. My mom's 2002 SS has SLP dual-dual exhaust and while it sounds great being a low roar constantly, it draws too much attention. The '95 Z28 I share with my sister has the stock exhaust and the sound is nice, so I'd like to have similar, although I'm assuming, weaker sounding exhaust on this Camaro v-6 I am trying to buy. I'm not crazy about having aftermarket based on how loud most of them are, I definitely don't want fart cannonesque sounding exhaust. But since I don't know what I'm doing, it is a problem either way. I don't want to buy used Z28 or Trans Am exhaust and find out I don't have all the pieces needed. And I don't want to buy aftermarket exhaust that is really loud possibly, chrome most likely, and probably several hundred dollars more than the Z28 exhaust.
Does anyone have a diagram or a picture, for that matter, of all the pieces neccessary for hooking up exhaust? I don't think it would matter whether it is aftermarket or not, just that is is dual exhaust for a Camaro

Really all there is:
one muffler (dual outlets), two tailpipes and two exhaust tips. MAYBE two new exhaust hangers.
Thats all.
If you want the I-pipe too, then add that piece as well.
It's very simple.
You can get an aftermarket exhaust that isn't chrome/stainless...you've seen too many imports.
