Will a catback help me that much?

Hey guys,

My Camaro has the Y87 performance package, so I've already got a dual outlet exhaust. So my question is, will an aftermarket catback really make any difference in horsepower? Also, I'm happy with the sound of the exhaust the way it is. Which catback has the closest sound to stock? I don't want anything too loud and obnoxious.

Thanks for the help,
Frank

It won't be overly noticeable, if even at all.

there is a gain, but it will not add 20 horsepower. you should pick up 1+ mpg, and of course the car will sound a lot better.

If you like the way your current exhaust sounds, the best thing for you to get would be a stock "take-off" exhaust from an LS1 car. The tubing is larger (2.75" compared to your 2.25") and the muffler is slightly different.

Your exhaust will be slightly louder, but it won't be nearly as raspy in the upper RPM range as it would be with a 3" aftermarket cat back.

The other good thing about take-offs is that you can usually get them free or very cheap.

Where would I find this take-off exhaust?

From a junkyard v8 F-body or even for quite cheap on Ebay. I got one for $130, which is thought was quite good for a newly painted and very gently used piece...and I only had to go across town on a Sunday to get it as well.

I really like my dual/daul from SLP. You could get 2.5" piping to the muffler, and fab it up to fit the 3" inlet. I got my dual/dual system from this board used for 200. The dual/dual is one of the quietest and best flowing catbacks as well.

V8 guys often give them away or sell them for next to nothing (I usually see them go for less than $50) when they upgrade to an aftermarket exhaust.

If there's any big car shows with swap meets, dig around through those. I went to the Daytona Turkey Rod Run and picked up a Flowmaster (say what you want) for 35 bucks with the tips.
