What will a cam and lifter do for me?

I keep reading about these and people said it makes a considerable difference. Do they? What exactly do they do and where would they go? So you get the loping sound with them on? Sorry for such a question, just search didn't bring much. Thanks!

Kinda. They basically deal with how the pistons are moving. The higher the cam, the more revolutions it helps with the piston. So say you are running a configuration set up for only 2,000 RPM, moving the car at 4,000 RPM would not help much since you are not getting the full advantage. If you get a higher camshaft, the more performance you will since the air to fuel mixture is greater, thus increasing performance. Only thing is when you get these, you get a rougher idle which was something I really did not want. Answered my own question lol.

I wrote something a while back about selecting camshafts. Maybe it will help.
