Re: what grade of gas?

I think the owners manual does say 87 some where. I used to put 89 in the V6 camaro I had, but if I had it again I'd probably put 87 in it knowing that higher octane isnt always good.

well, its all a cost vs. benefit thing here... u may get 1 mpg better, but u pay more for it, thus cost > benefit for using 91 octane...

i dunno what else it does for ur car, running better grade gas, but seeing how our cars are made for 87 octane... well, i think u should start saving ur money and switch to 87

FOr peopel that run midrange stuff...

I have been told that its cheaper to do liek 6 gallons of top octane, 6 gallons of low octane then to buy 12 gallons of mid grade.

Not sure if its true but always wondered

Re: what grade of gas?

Unless you have an advanced chip or tuning, I doubt any real benefits from running anything about the recommended 87 octane rating.

If you can tell a difference from running 87 compared to a higher grade, where the car runs worse on 87, you have a mechanical issue.

I've tried it before and honestly couldn't tell any difference except a few extra dollars out of my pocket.

Re: what grade of gas?

lol well my step dad collects Z28s... even though mine is a V6.. (hes got 2 78s, a 97, and a 99) he makes me put 89 in or he wont buy me gas LOL. He says the 87 even smells like **** and he builds motors and doesnt like running 87 is any car.. just his opinion..

He puts 93 in his Z's thouhg (well besides the red 78, which runs 116, but thats a different story for a different day )

Re: what grade of gas?

Z28's are meant to run high octaine (91 or 93), and V6's are meant to run 87.

Now, you DONT need tuning to take advantage of 93 octaine in a V6. Our PCM's are learning PCM's. If you put 93 in, and drive it fairly aggressively, the PCM will sense this and slightly advance the timing, thus giving you more power.

I know it works, ive tried it.

well, i just did the math to that, using the current gas prices where i am. gas prices are: 1.99 for 87; 2.09 for 89; 2.19 for 91. if you mix 87 and 91 with 6 gallons each at these prices, the total is $25.08. if you go ahead and use 12 gallons of 89, the total is $25.08. so, if gas prices steadily climb by a dime with each increasing octane, all you succeed in doing by using half and half is making people wonder what the heck you are doing, and thus proving you are an idiot. no offense to any one who does this. but you can't deny the math.

Re: what grade of gas?

i just found out where you heard this theory from.. back years ago when they used leaded fuel, the octanes were higher. you could mix premium regular (no lead) with regular leaded, and you would come out with a higher octane than normal. i dont really know how it works, because i was only half paying attention when this was explained to me, but thats what i understood of it.
