What do I have to do for a V8 conversion?

I love my 97 Camaro except that its a V6. I was wanting to get a 98-02 LS1 Camaro mainly bcuz of the engine. Where as I like the look of the 93-97 LT1 Camaro's a lot more. I've heard I need a diferent transmission for a V8 in a V6 Camaro...Is that true and why? I would prolly get the rear end from a salvage yard so no biggy. What do I need? Would it be cheaper to just buy a 93-97 Z28 and drop in an LS1?

IMHO if the car didnt come with a 5.7, don't put it, its gonna be to much money. And do you really think its worth paying all taht for a bigger engine when you can sell your car, add another 1 or 2 grand and just get a z?

i agree

I agree, its not worth the trouble. I'm not sure about the tranny swap but you will need: A new computer, new gagues, new motor mounts possibly a drive shaft and rear end. Plus the chances of you getting it right and not having problems are slim to none.
I also like the look of the 92-97, if you want a V8 the LT1 is not a bad way to go at all. Yes the LS1 is better, but the money it would cost you to put one is not cheap. You could just use the money to bulid the Lt1 vs. the swap.

1killerV6, those guys are worthless. you can do a swap for an LT1 for around 5 grand. and thats with everything you need including installation. look at http://transamcreationsusa.com for more info. or even http://hpsalvage.com for info also.

yes you do need a new tranny, computer, harness, gauges, k member, and stuff, but you buy it all together. its no big deal. i had everything shipped to my mechanics shop and it weighed a total of 1000 lbs. shipping only cost 232 bucks also.

it will cost a pretty penny, but if thats what you want then go for it. if you are having a shop do it for you then i would expect to pay 2 large just for installation.

oh wait, i take it all back. just go buy a V8 for $6000 and you will be a lot happier. no headaches as well. get in and drive!

okay these guys are right for the most part but if its what u wanna do and u love the car go for it. just be smart about it... personnally id rather take an lt1 over the ls1 mainly because it is built stronger from what i hear. currently im swapping my 3.4 a4 to a manual with a lt1. reason for doing so is im also doing a 383 stroker lt1. so figure id have to yank engine no matter what. also insurance for my car remains the same as v-6, and before any of u start talking about loss of insurance, i allready called insurance company and they told me if i get in accident they just will pay for a v-6 even though i have swapped.

anyway like i was saying ya it will cost about 5-6 thousand to do but if u shop around and buddy up with the right people it will cost a fraction of that. i got my lt1 and tranny along with everything else i need for about 800 bucks.its from a local company 10 min from my house so no shipping and my "friends" brother is a co-owner so he cut me a deal. as for the machine work i live in a small town and have had a lot of work done by the local machine shop so hes doing all of it for around 800 and as far as installation goes im doing it along with 2 of my mechanic buddies so essentially im paying a total of about 3 grand for a 383 stroker/ m5 conversion and still paying the v6 insurance....what a deal huh

Ok cuz I was originally planning to save for a V8 but a conversion was just an idea. Funny thing is that I like the look of the LS1 engine more IMO putting on the Corvette fuel rails looks sweet on the LS1's cuz most poeple I know aren't too knowledgable on any car's. They would think that the engine is from a Corvette meaning Corvette power to them . I know its not quite an LS6 from a Corvette but I could make it one with a conversion...but they don't know its not the LS6

my friend, you need to do some more searching.

just save up for your V8 and you will be fine.

I heard that the LS1 wouldn't fit in the 93-97 body. Is this true? or am I wrong?

Magnus did it... LS1 swap into his 97 firebird....

Its nto as much as you think but you have to be willing to do the owrk yourself and it won't help the resale of the car.

Whats better? trying to make a 3.8 V6 fast? dropping in a V8? or just buy an LT1 provided you can ever afford one?

The good thing about a swap is having the V8 and paying V6 insurance. This is always good for the younger guys. V8 insurance if you are under 21 or 25 is pretty rediculous for full coverage.
