V6s and exhaust cutouts

Does anyone have a cutout for their V6? If so, how often do u run it open? Is it manual or electronic? How does it sound? Do you notice any increase/decrease in performance? Just thinking about getting one. Thank you!

Two answers for every question you posted!
Some say it gains you a lot (if you properly tune for it) some say you won't gain anything (not tuning for it)
Some people thinks its the most awesome sound in the world,
others can't stand it. Usually the complaint is the volume, not sound. The sound is an open flow so there is no kick back or reverb, it just sounds mean.

I'd get one...will get one.

My premise on 'when' to run it is this: If you are out on the open highway or a busy city street (AWAY from houses) run it as much as you want.
NEVER during 'quiet hours'.
When you come into a Subdivision it gets closed!!!
Morning, noon, or night doesn't matter. Not only do you close the cut-out, but drive quietly and respect the others that may be sleeping.

SAME GOES with stereo's!!! Others have as much right not to here my exhaust as I have a right to make it loud. We've all gotta live together and make compromises. A cut-out used properly really helps to keep everyone happy.

I got one and i love it. mine has a cap, so i have to reach under and cap it but i never do. I just leave it open. I only capped it once and that was when i had to go get my emissions test.
I think you should go for it, mines a 98 Auto Firebird. I'm getting it tuned in a few months when everything i got is installed. Hope you like it if you end up getting one, it's not that expensive.

I'm curious why you think that. I would think it's much easier to flick a switch, than get under the car and install a cap. Mine is elecctric and have the option to have it open anywhere from 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, to full open. The varience in sound is pretty cool. I'm not saying electric is better, I'm just curious why you dont' think it's worth the money. I paid $185 for mine. I'm sure the manual cap cutouts are not even half that cost though. I'm guessing around the $50 range.

How does the cutout sound at abouve 4000 rpms? Does it get chainsaw like? A lot of 8 cyl cars have this problem at higher rpms? I'm thinking about getting one myself for the summer .

I have one. Its the manual kind, I picked it up for $26 out of summit. I'd save that 150 or so for other mods rather than get an electric, I can have mine open in 30 seconds. It sounds really bad *** at lower rpms especially with headers. Higher rpms it gets a little buzzy, but not horrible. I've have had more success at the track with it open. (around .1-.15 faster)

See, over time, I've decided this.

Some people like mean exhaust.

Some people like clean exhaust

Cutouts are mean

Mufflers are clean

So, after my little rhyme, decide what you like. If you want something that sounds mean, get a cutout. If you want a clean sounding exhaust, get a muffled exhaust.

But people especially after getting a cut-out, tend to leave it open a lot. Yep its a PITA to cap and un-cap it, but if your on a tight bidget, i think a regular cut-out is just fine. I mine all u gotta do is crawl under the car for like 1 minute.

i want an electric one though, just cause it'll be fun to un-cap and cap it for the heck of it

Re: V6s and exhaust cutouts

Wussup everyone, I'm sorry for my noobiness but I've recently been trying to learn more about our cars (V6).

But I am curious about this cut-out you guys are talking about. My question is, can I install a cut-out even if I have a magna muffler and headers? If so, how would it sound? Would it be waaaaaay to loud to the point where cops will pull me over? Or sound pretty damn mean to the point where people hear it and say "dayam that sounds mean"?

I was thinking about putting a jet stage 2 chip because I just purchased a 160 thermo stat. But I think buying an electric cut-out would be better and I'll just get the chip later in the future.

Please respond back, I really need help in deciding what I should do. Thanks everyone.
