Question V6 vs. V6

Ok guys check this!!!! I used to have an LS1 right but I could pay for it anymore now I'm in the process of getting me another car and I'm stuck between which car to get I either get a 1998 V6 Red Camaro or I get a 1986 white V6 Firebird! whats the diffrence? the Firebird has an 301 block on it so it doesn't run like a V6 only faster right? so help me out which one should I get holla back yall....

Now that is a dilemma. The 301 is a lighter weight emissions V8. It doesn't share any parts with any other pontiac V8 (except the valve covers) so performance parts are going to be scarce. They can be made to run pretty well, mine ended up in the high 12s with a 125 HP shot of nitrous. It will sound like a V8, give fairly decent mileage but like I said difficult to find parts. The V6 will sound like a V6, give decent mileage, some engine parts available but lack of computer mods hinders performance. It's a toss up, the 301 is going to be easier to add stuff like headers, tree dual exhaust, etc... but expect to pay (read $$$) for those headers.

I find it odd that someone would put a pontiac 301 in that car. The transmission would have to have been changed as well due to the difference in bolt pattern from a chevy. Same goes for the mounts. Are you absolutely sure it's a pontiac 301 and not a chevy 302 (actually 301, but called a 302)?

I'd get the 98 because it is newer and better looking IMO.

The 301 is as I described above. The 302 is a Chevy, a much more desirable motor.

I woudl go with the 98, more reliable... newer looking...

I know nothing about the motor you are tlaking about...

but the average non-tpi 3rd gen v8 f-body, is slower hten a 3.8L v6.

the 98 stick or auto?

check the RPO codes on the door and look for GU6 if its a auto, if it has GU$, it has 3.08s, bit of a slug.

I have a 3800 'maro, (same engine as in the 98) and I thought it was a good motor. It held its own against alot of cars on the street, not to mention it's newer, more reliable and has a ton of part avialable.

I would choose the 98. Most likely the engine in the 86 is a 305, which is not a very desireable v8. I seriously doubt that the engine in the 86 is a 302. The 302 only came in the 67-69 camaro z28s. Although someone could duplicate the engine, I doubt it is emissions legal in an 86. Also the 301 came in the mid 70's early 80's trans ams. I doubt that would be legal in a 86 as well. The 305 was the only v8 for the 3rd gen f body's until the 350 or 5.7l engine came out in 86 or 87. Anyway, if you have a 305, the 98 will smoke it.

Good choice... put some rims on it, and there is nothing hotter then a girl in a modded f-body
