Unhappy V6 help needed... not a Camaro though

I've got an '84 BMW 733i with a 3.2 liter inline 6cyl. I was going to the gas station the other day, but misjudged how much gas I had left. Right before I pulled into the station, the car died and I had to coast in next to the pump. I put about 5-6 gallons in and tried to start her up. All she did was turn over... no fire. I thought maybe she just needed to run before the gas would get to the motor. So I used some starter fluid to get her running for about 30 seconds. I stopped the spray and 5 seconds later, she was sputtering and dead again. Does anybody know if this car has to be primed with fuel before it'll fire again? If so, any clue on how its done? Or does it sound like I've seized up the fuel pump? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I woudl try the lounge might find more people there with an answer...

but maybe the fuel filter is clogged?

Or maybe the pump?

Crap from the last 20 years is floating at the top of the fuel tank, and when you ran it empty you might have sucked some of the stuff through the line clogging up the fuel filter...
