temperature sensor tricking

I was looking into some low cost mods to get some more power out of my 98 3.8 and happened to see on ebay a rediculous product. They are selling a 3500ohm resistor for $10. Does this mod actually do anything for the car? Or is it bad for the car. I happen to have resistors at my disposal so i'm curious what you all think.

Re: temperature sensor tricking

won't do anything for you unless you could keep your computer in open loop, but if you did with that kind of resistor pluged into your coolant temp sensor will make the engine run extreamly rich, miss, and back fire horribly. Foul out your plugs and destroy your O2 sensors and cat. And besides once the computer does go into closed loop the os sensor will see that the car is running extreamly rich and the short term fuel trims will correct the error and just shorten the injector pules thus bypassing what you just did with the resistor. Like deadmeat said just don't mess with it, its just a dumb gimick like the tornado or electric super charger. Spend your money on better mods that acually give you power and not just waist your money.

Re: temperature sensor tricking

its useless... IAT only commands like 3 degrees of timing total.

Re: temperature sensor tricking

The IAT circuit is responsible for the rate of advance, not the total advance. By using a resister in place of the sensor you are tricking the computer into seeing a lower intake air temperature. The computer responds by quickening the rate in which the timing is advanced. It does not increase the total timing, only the rate that the advance is brought in. The effect is a sharper throttle response at part throttle for about the first 1/3 of the pedal travel. So...... does nada for WOT but does make the throttle a little sharper at part throttle. I also does not alter fuel..... period. You may experience some part throttle knock if you use crappy gas, negating the timing advance rate.
