Is someone under my car?

I have a 98 Camaro and occasionally (usually when it's cold), I hear what sound like someone knocking on the rearend/under the car. Its like someone quickly knocking on a door. Not a constant knock. Like 1-2-3-4. It only does it while I'm stopped and it dosen't seem to effect the car, but it's weird. Any suggestions?

Very well could be someone underneath the car!

I remember one time I had a buzzing sound under the floorpan of the passenger side. I looked underneath and tried to figure it out for a month, I finally gave up. But one night I got this crazy idea to put the car up on jacks and then leave it. So, about 2 in the morning or so I run out my front door and slide under the car as fast as I can only to find my problem - underpants gnomes! Should have seen the look on their faces when I caught them. Threw them a beatin' I did!

I have no idea based on that info. I need more description to help out.

I can't think of any more of a description. That's my problem. I'm stuck. It just sounds like it's comming from the rearend. I dunno.

UNDERPANTS GNOMES!!!!!! LMFAO.................

I almost fell out of my freakin' chair...

In all seriousness, does it sound like the fuel pump? Normally fuel pumps buzz when they start going bad, but other than the suspension returning to it's origional position after the "Dukes of Hazzard" jumps....I'm clueless

Thanks for being yourselves guys...
But I can gaurantee it's not a "buzz". Definitely a quick knocking sound, like you would knock on a door. It happens rarely but i doo hear it. And it's only when I'm stopped. Not like I could hear it over the exhaust anyway.

Could it be your exhaust knocking on something?

Well as F-body owners we need to get used to the unusual random sounds. I have a few it took me months to figure out and a few that remain to annoy me. Its just part of the f-body way.

No Sh_t.. my 98v6 does the exact same thing!! It drives me crazy. I was thinking maybe the fuel pump or something. Sounds like the rear driverside somewhere. It's not the exhaust tapping on anything, and I know it's not the gnomes, I lock the cat in the garage at night to kep them away.

sounds like some kinda rocker or something tapping at the rear of the car and exactly as you described it. does it once or twice when its cold then doesn't do it at all anymore...

Wonder if cold start up, tweaks the motor enough to simulate the exhaust clang of wheel hop???

it's not a person. i had some gypsies living under my car once and they make more of a thud sound. especially when you hit a bump in the road.

those are your shocks brotha man. when it's cold, your shocks get stuck. as it heats up, your shocks begin to break loose and start working properly.

mine does it if i leave it outside in the cold. go hop on the rear bumper before you start it up and it will break it loose. you'll hear that noise.

when you stop, the load on your shocks decreases. the popping is your cold shocks going back up from being depressed under load. when they heat up, it'll stop.

i wouldn't use that one though. someone living under there makes for a better conversation.

same thing happend to my 98, only when it was cold. i ended up being the hanger on the muffler, it had a little rust. and on cold start up it would shake and vibrate just enough to start tapping on the rear end. cost me $4.00 to fix....and at least a month to figure out
