Service Engine Soon

Ok, so I was driving home yesterday after just filling up with gas and I was crusing along at about 60 with my speed control on, and then the service engine soon light poped (solid, NOT blinking). I drove home and went to work later that day, no problems (but light was still on). And then on the way home from work when I went to turn my headlights on the headlight control and gauge brightness panel thingy didnt light up, like it always did.
Are these 2 problems related? And is there a easy/cheap fix for this? Also is it safe to drive with the SES light on?
I read the owner manual and it said it was emission control that caused it to come on? So took the gas cap off and put it on again like it said in the manual that might cause it, but it didnt work.
I read the SES topic that was just brought up below but it didnt make any sense or help me.
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance,
Dustin

Re: Service Engine Soon

best thing to do is get the code checked

go to an auto parts store and ask them to scan the code

Re: Service Engine Soon

I would check your fuses for the gauge light problem.

As for the SES light, you can take your car to just about any parts store and have it scanned. they will pull up a code and tell you whats wrong with it.

The gauge light worked again the other night but shut off again, so I dont know what the problem with that is.

You probably didn't have the gas cap on tight enough. I know you checked that, but the light won't go off immediately. You either have to erase the code, or put X number of miles on the car before the code will realize the problem is fixed and clear itself.

Re: Service Engine Soon

3 cold to operating temp restarts with no problems will clear an obd2 also, but the code will remain stored in memory
